Morgan ci spiega che dovremmo parlare non di grazia per Roggero ma di pietà per i ladri, che “non hanno fatto nulla alle persone”. Come se una rapina a mano armata con violenza privata, percosse, minacce di morte, sequestro di persona con tanto di fascette fosse un semplice contrattempo. Poi arriva la minimizzazione definitiva: “Il proprietario del negozio si è spaventato, ma loro hanno rubato un oggetto”. Un oggetto? No. In una rapina non si porta via soltanto un bene materiale. Si porta via la serenità, la sicurezza, la fiducia,lasciando un trauma che non si supera mai. E ancora: “Noi non sappiamo perché hanno rubato”. Ecco il riflesso condizionato che ormai conosciamo bene. Quando il criminale delinque, bisogna sempre cercare una giustificazione o una nobile ragione. Forse era disperato. Forse aveva una famiglia da mantenere. Aveva figli. Forse non aveva alternative. Forse la società lo ha deluso. La domanda sembra essere sempre la stessa: “Perché ha rubato?”. Quasi mai, invece: “Perché una persona perbene dovrebbe vivere nel terrore dentro il proprio negozio tirato su con sacrificio?”. Infine il colpo di scena. Roggero diventa il cattivo della storia perché “è un imprenditore, pensa a fare soldi”. Come se lavorare, fare impresa, investire, rischiare il proprio patrimonio e mantenere un’attività fosse una colpa morale. Il rapinatore, invece, che anziché lavorare deruba chi lavora, viene raccontato come una figura da comprendere. Ma non basta. Persino Robin Hood viene tirato in ballo. Ma Robin Hood è un personaggio della letteratura, non il modello con cui leggere la cronaca giudiziaria del XXI secolo. Ed è proprio questo il punto che trovo più inquietante. Da anni assistiamo a un rovesciamento culturale: chi lavora, produce ricchezza e paga le tasse viene guardato con diffidenza; chi delinque viene raccontato attraverso il filtro delle attenuanti, del disagio, del contesto sociale, delle motivazioni.

They have been there years. And they never saw any of it. They should never be forgiven.

There was a line from Zohran Mamdani’s inaugural address yesterday that took my breath away. He said he intended to replace “the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism.” Collectivism in its various forms is responsible for the deaths of at least one hundred million people in the last century. Socialist and Communist forms of government around the world today—Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, etc.—are disastrous. Catholic social teaching has consistently condemned socialism and has embraced the market economy, which people like Mayor Mamdani caricature as “rugged individualism.” In fact, it is the economic system that is based upon the rights, freedom, and dignity of the human person. For God’s sake, spare me the “warmth of collectivism.”
