We are truly sorry for the loss that occurred yesterday at Gray Whale Cove State Beach in San Mateo County, where a person suffered a medical emergency and fell from the cliffs, turning a rescue into a recovery.
In the wake of this sad tragedy, we are reminded of the inherent beauty and the unpredictable nature of our coastline. While the views are breathtaking, the terrain can be unstable. We want to encourage everyone visiting our shores to stay mindful of their surroundings and maintain a safe distance—ideally at least 10 feet—from cliff edges.
You may notice our personnel, like the firefighter pictured here, working near the edge during operations. It is important to note that they are equipped with specialized "edge protection," including helmets and safety ropes, which allows them to safely act as the "eyes and ears" for the Incident Commander. This rigorous safety protocol is what enables us to coordinate complex rescues and maintain a vantage point that would otherwise be unsafe.
We are profoundly grateful for the seamless coordination of all the agencies who responded to this incident: CAL FIRE, Coastside Fire, Pillar Point Harbor Patrol, @NoCoFire (Pacifica Fire), CHP-H30, CAL FIRE, San Mateo County Fire, @SMCSheriff, and CA State Parks.
We remain committed to your safety and ask that you help us by staying back and staying safe.

@LeNegrowFarmer @darvidosiris Don’t forget Seminole means runaway! What were they running away from? The US documents say the Yamassee/Seminoles and creeks were described as negroes.

U.S. athletes @gretaneimanas and @maxfennell spoke to members of Rwanda’s sports sector about building careers and industries through sports. As a growing platform for businesses, organized sports are creating new opportunities for economic growth. #USAinRwanda#SportsDiplomacy
Thank you to the U.S. Embassy in Kigali’s @SportsDiplomacy program & @RWBookmobile for an incredible event on sporting careers! Our kids were inspired by the stories of @maxfennell, Jazilla Mwamikazi, & Greta Neimanas. And our #cycling team received expert coaching! 🚲
One of my favorite experiences was meeting the Honorable Minister of Sports, Nelly Mukazayire. It was a true honor to be welcomed alongside fellow American athlete Greta Neimanas and the U.S. Embassy Kigali delegation. Our conversation centered around the powerful role of sports diplomacy in strengthening Rwanda–U.S. relations, and the importance of fostering inclusive athletic opportunities especially in cycling and paracycling. We also discussed the inspiring vision of Rwanda becoming a global sports hub, particularly as the country prepares to host the 2025 UCI Road World Championships. The energy, passion, and commitment to youth engagement and development through sport was both humbling and motivating.

In their return to the Field of Dreams, the guests and BCT team riders participated in cycling clinic held at the center's racetrack and pump truck.

In the afternoon, the visiting athletes, the staff from the US Embassy, members of the @BugeseraC visited Ntarama Memorial site and pay tribute to the victims of the Genocide Against the Tutsi in 1994.
Prior to the visit at the Center, a team was welcomed by the Mayor of Bugesera district @MutabaziRich, discussed about the "Sports Diplomacy Program" and how it can facilitate other sport development initiatives in @BugeseraDistr.
Yesterday, we're honored to welcome two athletes and Olympians: @maxfennell & @gretaneimanas, a team from the US Embassy made of its Deputy Public Affairs, Marissa Polnerow and the Alumni program specialist, Jean de Dieu Hakorimana as part of “Sports Diplomacy” program.
Visiting Rwanda for the first time, @maxfennell was struck by the country’s athletic potential. “This is the perfect training ground for world-class athletes,” he said.
Leading cycling clinics for youth aged 9 to 18, Fennell emphasized hard work, persistence, and self-belief. “We already see the talent—it’s about helping them believe in themselves.”
Reflecting on his own decade-long career, he added, “With focus and dedication, there’s no doubt Rwanda will produce world champions.”
