PSG Analysis pt.2 -> Dropping Overloads 📝

Konate is m2m with Doue who drops at the same time as Joao Neves. He then relocates when he sees Neves attacking the available space.

He moves into a "limbo" zone where Konate simply cannot commit to marking forcing Gravenberch to choose between Zaire Emery or him.

This small doubt allows Sofanov to play an excellent ball to beat the press.

PSG Analysis 📝 : Deep Buildup ≠ Indirect Football

PSG tends to commit multiple players deep in buildup. Normally 2/3 midfielders and even dropping wingers / forwards that start high.

This allows man to man schemes to be exploited by positional fluidity and direct play despite their slow buildup.

With so many players dropping many teams would not find a way to pose a threat yet Hakimi's fluidity finds him running into space on the opposite wing he is meant to be playing.

Racing Santander vs Getafe: Tactical Breakdown 📝

Jose Alberto's Racing was set up in their talisman 4-2-3-1 featuring starboy Sergio Martinez once again. They struggled throughout the first half as Puerta often found himself soffocated in the midfield.

What was clear was the tactical identity of Racing was unchanged. Field tilts and overloads were very common which posed an intense battle between Getafe's aggresive midfield press and Racing's positional fluidity.

Getafe set up in a 5-3-2 formation in posession which throughout the game tried to break Racing down through width and crossing which eventually led to the winning goal. Satriano often had room to roam into pockets while Unal stretched the field vertically. Mojica was also excellent when given the space to run and cross.

Djene was quite effective against Villalibre despite his physical presence and this broke down Racing's usual fluidity through the dropping 9. JAL instructed the players to play faster through Getafe's midblock with wider wingers which led to greater success towards the end of the first half.

As the second half progressed Racing gained more control of the midfield, especially through their counter press and the pressure the centrebacks were putting on Getafe's forwards when attempting to play out. Maguette looked great and was able to dictate the game up until Getafe's goal.

An unfortunately missed penalty costs you at this level and Getafe made Racing pay. Overall a good game by Racing who still look a little green for first division.

Real Madrid vs Espanyol: Tactical Analysis📘

Mourinho started the game in his classic 4-2-3-1 formation which turned into a 3-2-2-4.

Arda inverted to create a midfield overload and receive in the pockets. Dumphries occupied width and had some good combinations with Arda.

Some thing that surprised me was our heavy possession approach. Huijsen was quite effective finding Jude between the lines and overloads through first time passes were led to many chances.

Diomande also impressed me a lot. Seemed to have the ability to force Espanyol defenders back into their box creating great crossing opportunities and space for cut backs.

Very promising and well fought first game. Finally seeing a system and urgency in the final third. Espi also showed the importance of a 9 figure.

Honestly props to Mourinho for the subs which led to the winning goal. I’m very excited to see how this team evolves over the coming weeks.

Preseason Reflections pt.2 —> Real Madrid 👇

Real Madrid come into their 3rd season with Mbappe in the team after 2 trophy less years. With Mourinho at the head there is no doubt this season will be quite exciting and, above all chaotic in many ways.

HOWEVER, Madrid must find a balance between CHAOS and CONTROL. Most importantly they need a system.

The last time I remember Madrid truly having a “personality” in their way of play was under Ancelotti the year of the 15th UCL. Classic midfield diamond with Jude as a F9 who generally left the CBs without someone to mark.

Mourinho brings a 4-3-2-1 system which, in past years has relied on less possession and more counter attacks through rapid wingers and a strong 9 figure (think Pavlidis).

In Madrid this must be adapted to our player profiles. Key word ADAPTED not forgotten. Jude is essentially Mourinho’s dream player due to his versatility in attack and defense.

And while I am sure the counter attacking threat can be incredibly effective due to the quality and speed up top, it is the low block that worries me.

Madrid have struggled so much over the last two years to break down low blocks which unfortunately are ever more common in La Liga. Players like Bernardo and Diomande will definitely help in this regard because of their ability to create and make the attack more dynamic (not single sided through vini).

In order to dominate and compete in Europe madrid also need to modernise, the idea that a flawed press is enough to beat teams like PSG, Bayern or even domestically Barcelona and Atleti is rediculous.

It may sounds harsh but Madrid has no idea how to press effectively . Full backs are hesitant to press up and play man to man , midfielders have no idea who they are marking and are easily confused by rotation. This MUST improve.

Finally Mourinho must find unity in a very difficult dressing room. I’m not talking about egos, it’s more about love and commitment than anything else . Players must want to die for eachother. And I don’t think anyone can do that better than Mourinho so, as a Real Madrid fan I am eagerly looking back to seeing my team get back to the very top once again.
