I think “fiction doesn’t effect reality” is a bit incorrect. What it should be is “fiction only effects reality if you let it”

Aka, if you have a working brain a violent video game or movie will not convince you to go out and hurt people in real life, and if that’s all it took to convince someone they were likely going to do it regardless.

I also think “fiction effects reality” is only ever talked about from the most negative perspective. Because how many of us have experienced a piece of art that changed us into a genuinely better person.

Even that positive change can only happen if we allow it to. If we choose to take the lesson and messages to heart and apply them in real life. Plenty of people “consume” media in the most literal sense. Through one ear and out the other never taking anything they experience to heart and actually applying it to themselves.
