So you're telling me a 189-PAGE NAKED SPEC with a TABLE OF CONTENTS from two UNPRODUCED SCREENWRITERS just sold to Sony for nearly $1MIL??
The trades aren't telling you the full story. Let's get into it. 👇 https://t.co/2ErofEwRSm

Q: Should I make a pitch deck for my screenplay?
A: Probably not. Most writers that don't move people emotionally with words, will also not move them with images
Instead - focus on getting better at evoking EMOTION
MICROBUDGET FILMMAKING TIP: You’re probably not Christopher Nolan. But if you’re making a movie, you’re living out your dream—and helping the actors and crew around you live out theirs.
Make it fun.
You have something Chris Nolan doesn't have -- FUN (and chairs. Let people sit)
Hey screenwriter friends! Yesterday's post about the 189-page script that sold for a million bucks kicked up a ton of great conversation––thank you! And a lot of you were asking the same thing, one way or another: okay, but how does anyone break in NOW?
So let's do it live.
Tomorrow / Thursday 8/27 at 6pm PT––I'm opening up my Zoom room for a state of the state of screenwriting in Hollywood: what's changing in the industry, what isn't, and what's actually working (and not) when it comes to breaking in. I'll lead the thing and leave a big chunk of time for Q&A, so bring whatever you've got.
And in the spirit of Self-Marketing 101, a little competition:
Reply with a killer logline for whatever you're working on and I'll DM you a link to register. Tomorrow night I'll pick my favorite of the bunch––and that writer gets a COMPLIMENTARY READ + 1-HOUR CONSULT.*
*You have to show up to win...
Reply here or DM, whatever feels best. Cutoff is 5pm PT tomorrow. Hope to see you there!

Screenwriting pro tip: People spend a lot of time trying to figure out why their logline doesn’t work.
98% of the time, the problem isn’t the logline.
It’s the concept.
“I’m starting on page one and never letting up!” is a great ambition… and a common screenwriting trap. If you skip the setup, page 20 often becomes an exposition traffic jam. You don’t eliminate exposition—you relocate it.

This 16-second movie was made by a member in my community.
Hollywood may never read your script - but they'll watch a clip.
And when people feel something...
...they ask for more.
The controversy was a byproduct of the clarity.
Tarantino. Nolan. Bong Joon-ho. Aronofsky. None of them were being controversial for the sake of it. They were being specific.
Are you telling your story the best possible way — or the safest way?

Most filmmakers are still stuck in production hell.
👊🏼Chaotic sets
👊🏼Expensive gear
👊🏼Gatekeepers everywhere
Jamie Heinrich spent 30 years inside that chaos.
Then AI flipped the industry.
Instead of fighting it, Jamie built a simple workflow for creating cinematic, viral videos fast - without bloated workflows or wasted time.
I learned his workflow - for only five bucks - and that's how I made this clip.
You can too.
⚠️ Not for spectators. Only worth it if you’ll actually use it.

I wrote this one a few years back. This is the English Trailer. It's getting its international release this Christmas (though I'm not sure where in the U.S. it's popping up yet).
I have pitched ideas to studios, execs, reps over a thousand times in my career. How many of those turned into gigs? How many into actual movies or shows?
A few.
A few out of literally a thousand+.
It’s very, very easy to look at the next pitch with the mentality that it’s probably not gonna hit. Because statistically, it’s probably not.
But we need to center ourselves in what I love referring to as a “non-zero” set of possibilities.
As in, yeah the statistics may say it’s a long shot, but guess what the chances also are? They are non-zero.
You hear this expressed a million ways, one of my other faves as “it only takes one.” Because that, too, is true.
So today, as I head into a pitch I love knowing it’s a long shot statistically, I will remind myself of my chances of success:
Non-zero. It only takes one.

The number of scripts Ive received in the last 4 mos that were not even close to being in basic screenwriting format has been more than Ive seen in a decade. I dont mean style, I mean basic formatting. Shit written in Word. WTF? Why arent folks reading scripts & learning basics?
