Sharing a few thoughts just hours ahead of the inaugural Summit:
From Aid to Alliance: What the Africa- Nordic Health Summit Must Deliver:
This 100 gathering of Ministers, Diplomats & leading Nordic actors in health must be more than another high-level meeting.
It marks a turning point from traditional aid to genuine, mutually beneficial partnership.
Recent Nordic reflections on global health, including Denmark’s Prescription for Global Health, made one reality clear: sustainable impact is impossible without true partnership with Africa, grounded in local priorities, shared risk, and shared accountability.
Africa is not asking for short-term projects. It is seeking long-term collaborations that strengthen health systems, build markets, and create shared value. African governments are increasingly ready to co-invest, reform, and be held accountable, if partnerships respect sovereignty and reward performance rather than dependency.
The Nordic life sciences sector is uniquely positioned to lead this shift. With global strengths in pharmaceuticals, biotech, digital health, AI, and data-driven care, Nordic innovation aligned with African priorities can both strengthen resilient health systems and unlock sustainable markets.
Rwanda demonstrates what real partnership looks like: strong national leadership that consistently puts people first , predictable policy, trusted data, transparent and successful collaboration across government, donors, communities, and the private sector. Rwanda’s progress in health system strengthening and disease elimination offers a scalable model for the continent.
Ahead of the Summit, the call to Nordic leaders is clear: Come ready to build. Bring investment-ready ideas, shared-risk financing, research partnerships, and regulatory cooperation.
The solid foundation forged through 22 years of Sweden–Rwanda @Sida -@Uni_Rwanda collaboration is a valuable asset; one that positions us well to expand our efforts and deliver even stronger results.
If successful, this Summit will be remembered not as another dialogue , but as the moment global health cooperation moved decisively from aid to alliance.
Just a few hours ago, @gatesfoundation
issued a major announcement reaffirming its deepened commitment to true partnerships with Africa.
Beginning with Rwanda, the announcement highlights what is possible when strong local leadership meets long-term, purpose-driven global collaboration. I kindly encourage Nordic leaders and partners in Health to read it and come inspired to our upcoming forum, ready to explore how we can learn from succesful collaborations and strengthen impactful partnerships.

ICN CEO Dr. Howard Catton expressed his honor at returning to #Kigali , praising its beauty and the powerful voices of African nurses at the congress. He emphasized that investing in nurses and midwives strengthens care, advocacy, and leadership, and reaffirmed ICN’s commitment to ensuring they have the resources they need.
Dr. Catton highlighted the frontline role of nurses in addressing the climate crisis and the ongoing inequality in workforce distribution, which is exacerbated by aggressive recruitment from high-income countries. He underscored that strong nursing associations build strong nurses and strong nations and pledged ICN’s support, including in disaster and conflict settings.
