A new safety and modernization push on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Red Line could bring platform screen doors and eventually fully automated trains, similar to a system already operating at Dulles International Airport.

In his report, @tomroussey7news highlights the airport’s AeroTrain, which has run since 2010 with no onboard operator and uses platform screen doors to prevent passengers from falling onto tracks. The trains can reach speeds of about 42 mph and have operated without major issues for more than a decade.

Metro officials are exploring installing similar platform doors on the Red Line and potentially transitioning to automated train operations within roughly six years, as part of broader efforts to improve safety and efficiency.
