HAPPENING NOW: I am inside the Oxford County Courthouse, where we are waiting for the arrival of Thomas Tellier, who will appear before a judge to be sentenced.
Tellier was found guilty of murdering his stepson in 2022 and could face up to at least 25 years to life in prison.
I will share updates on what's happening in the courtroom throughout the morning. @WGME
The stepfather also just went before the judge telling family and friends, “I’m sorry for putting you through this and I’m sorry I can’t take him back.”
The court is now in recess.
➡️ Defense is asking for a minimum life sentence (25 Years) based on Tellier:
- Having no criminal history
- A strong history of employment
- An army veteran
- Say, while he is a “murderer,” we all make mistakes and can not be held accountable for one action.
- Tellier himself is showing remorse to friends and family today.
➡️ Prosecutors are asking for 48 years based on:
- Child being present at the time of murder.
- Showing no remorse during the murder, saying “he was happy his stepson was gone.”
- Text messages leading up to the murder showed that he hated Nicholas and had intentions of killing him.
- The extent of emotional damage it has had on Nicholas’s mother and other family members.
