Matt Damon got $15M to play Odysseus. Tom Holland got $10M. Add every name on the graphic and you get roughly $57.5M in cast salaries on a $250M production.

Christopher Nolan took $20M upfront, structured as an advance against 20% of Universal's box office take, with 15% to him and 5% to producer Emma Thomas. First-dollar gross, meaning he gets paid before the studio recovers a cent of the $375M it spent making and marketing the film.

The Odyssey has grossed $652M in two weekends and analysts see a real path to $1B. The same structure on Oppenheimer paid Nolan roughly $100M.

That deal used to belong to actors. In the 90s and 2000s, Tom Cruise and Will Smith got $20M against 20% of first-dollar gross, because the star on the poster was the reason people bought tickets. Studios spent two decades clawing that structure back from talent.

One person in Hollywood still has it, and he's behind the camera. A 3-hour, R-rated adaptation of a 2,700-year-old poem, no franchise, no China release, and half the opening weekend audience was under 35. They came for the director.

The ten faces on the poster split $57.5M. The name that isn't on it takes home more than all of them put together.
