Here’s the need.

Shelton “hanging up the phone” gesture is disrespectful to his opponent and to tennis.

Djokovic crushed Shelton and intentionally mocked his disrespectful gesture because Djokovic sees that behavior by Shelton as “bad for the game”. I agree, some may not.

Look at Djokovic’s fellow Serbian countryman from the NBA Champion Denver Nuggets, Jokic. Look at Giannis when he was NBA Champ with the Bucks. All three champions believe deeply in humility and not bringing attention to one’s self or disrespecting the opponent.

It appears Shelton does not lead with humility. So when he disrespects his opponent with a self indulgent gesture he is going to be served that gesture back as a message to respect the game and the opponent.

It’s a choice. When you win you get the opportunity to show young players what is good and what is bad for the game.

Novak Djokovic is someone we can relate to and sympathize with because he is not perfect and has his flaws like any of us. But ultimately, he does not pretend to be something he is not and has stayed true to himself. And that is something to be revered and admired.
