What a pleasure to be invited to take part in the @monashengineers PhD alumni panel at this year’s @MonashUni Engineering Postgraduate Conference, sharing my insights on life after your thesis in academia and working for government to future PhD graduates.
#abc2022 Conference. What an opportunity to network and present not once, but twice on past collaborative work between @MonashCivil, @VicGovDoT, and @Austroads with the national #bridge engineering community.
@mayermelhem5 @VicGovDoT This kind of detailed #bridge#assessment work is the engine for our society: keeping people safe; moving freight efficiently; making our food and goods cheaper. Super work @mayermelhem5 @VicGovDoT !
Proud of what @monashengineers can accomplish!
Not just trucks, without #bridges Australia stops too! Very pleased to be involved with the dedicated team of bridge engineers at @VicGovDoT. The released B-Triple & upcoming AB-Triple network maps were possible by creating streamlined assessments for more than 2000 structures.
Change of workspace. Change of role. Back in the @VicGovDoT office, in a brand new building with sweeping views of the Dandenongs and the tops of #Melbourne city buildings afar. I’ve got my caddy and ready to help look after the state’s #bridges.
With new bike trails by @levelcrossings now complete, and connections to others trails all opened, its very pleasing to cycle around town and admire these @spanningbridges.
Something close to home, quite literally! It was great witnessing with the locals these 30+ metre 140+ tonnes precast prestressed concrete L-beams be lifted in place to form the next @levelcrossings bridges.
Together with @ccaprani from @MonashCivil, discover about our experience from @Austroads Project ABT6111 & solutions for achieving improved and much-needed adoption of probabilistic-based #bridge assessments in Australia. Free read to the first 50!

Happy 90th Birthday to this spectacular beauty. @TransportforNSW is taking good care of you. Over 500 m, it’s the longest single span from all @SpanningBridges in #Australia. Inspiring many, like that little enthusiastic kid, to peruse engineering & even get a PhD in #bridges.
Plus, a personal contribution in Chapter 4 of “Bridge Loading” by Profs Eugene OBrien, Andrej Nowak, and @ccaprani featuring a summary of dynamic load allowances in @standardsaus AS5100 Bridge Design and Assessment.
Just published: my main COVID project!
Bridge Traffic Loading: From Research to Practice
CRC Press, Taylor & Francis
The first book focusing on highway bridge traffic loading, in collaboration with leading experts from across the globe.

New book publications! Be sure to check out Chapter 13 by @ccaprani and myself in @SpringerEng “Engineering for Extreme”, edited by Profs Mark Stewart & @DavidRosowsky.
"Extreme Vehicles & Bridge Safety" (w/@mayermelhem5)
We touch on the cognitive biases that can make for sub-optimal decisions on low-probably high-consequence events.
For #bridge safety mgmt, we should consider the human in the loop.

New Year. New Role. Looking forward in assisting @VicGovDoT to update heavy vehicle access networks in Victoria by applying my @MonashUni acquired research on bridge safety assessments and ongoing contact with @MonashCivil.
🤩@levelcrossings are celebrating reaching 50+ rail-road grade separations in just six years. That's 50+ brand new #bridges designed and constructed in #Melbourne. @mayermelhem5 and David Huggett presented a breakdown in @bdebridgeweb of those first 50 structures.
Free to access for the next 50 days
Myself, @ccaprani (@MonashUni) & Prof. Mark Stewart (@Uni_Newcastle) present a method for updating safety partial factors for a bridge code with no explicit target safety level + recommendations for @standardsaus AS5100.

The *ospgrillage* package will help with automating analyses, and will be especially useful for parametric analyses of bridge decks.
Developed by Dr Justin Ngan & me, with contributions from @mayermelhem5 and others.

After a special field trip with @ella_zhang09 with highs and lows, it was great to see these much cherished @VicGovDoT #bridges continue to do their essential service.
In more awards than one, honoured to be recognised for my teaching contributions in assisting Team @MonashCivil as the 2021 Team Player and, once again, Best Teaching Assistant. Thanks to the ever cooperative team incl. @ccaprani, @ozlizi & @monashengineers Education Designers.
Another semester of teaching CIV4280 Bridge Design & Assessment done! Impossible to deliver such complex content to so many students without this great team of TAs, esp. @mayermelhem5 - thank you 👏👏👏 @MonashStructEng @MonashCivil
