Honoured to participate during the launch of the Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) Kenya virtually. This milestone reflects the strong partnership between Government, UNDP, the private sector, and development partners in advancing Kenya’s biodiversity and sustainable development agenda.
Kenya’s rich natural capital underpins our economy and supports millions of livelihoods. However, it is increasingly under threat from climate change, land degradation, pollution, and unsustainable resource use. This is why we must treat biodiversity conservation not just as an environmental issue, but as a key economic and development priority.
BIOFIN provides us with a practical, evidence-based pathway to close the biodiversity finance gap by strengthening policy coherence, improving resource allocation, and mobilizing new and innovative financing.
As we move into implementation, our focus must now shift to action mainstreaming biodiversity into planning and budgeting, aligning financial flows with nature-positive outcomes, and scaling up investments that protect our ecosystems.
I reaffirm our commitment to working closely with the National Treasury and all stakeholders to ensure biodiversity is fully integrated into our national development processes. Together, we can build a resilient, inclusive, and nature-positive economy for present and future generations. #BIOFINLaunch #Biodiversity #NaturePositive #SustainableDevelopment
Did you know that Kenya is a party to UNCBD and a signatory to the historic KMGBF, a 10-year roadmap to live in harmony with nature.
The 23 KMGBF targets link biodiversity to health, climate, and the economy.

Environment and Climate Change Principal Secretary, Dr. Eng. Festus K. Ng’eno, today held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Kum Jan-Seung, the First Vice Minister for Climate, Energy and Environment of South Korea, on the sidelines of the ongoing #UNEA7 meeting in Nairobi.
The discussions, also attended by Ms. Sunghyun Jang, South Korea’s Deputy Permanent Representative to UNEP and UN-Habitat, focused on strengthening collaboration between Kenya and South Korea in several key areas, including waste-to-energy technologies, climate change action, and the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
Dr. Ng’eno noted that the Ministry is currently exploring a working framework to deepen cooperation with South Korea on waste-to-energy and circular economy models, with an emphasis on practical learning and potential technology transfer.
As part of the collaboration, Kenya is keen to benchmark successful Korean waste-to-energy facilities, with plans for a technical visit by the PS to gain firsthand insights.
The two leaders agreed to strengthen technical cooperation to enhance Kenya’s readiness and participation in global carbon market mechanisms.
Article 6 of the Paris Agreement creates rules for international carbon markets, allowing countries to trade emission reductions (ITMOs) to meet their NDCs (Nationally Determined Contributions) via cooperative approaches Art 6.2 to unlock climate finance, linking national targets with global carbon trading for cost-effective climate action.
The meeting also highlighted ongoing support to Kenya on biodiversity conservation, particularly through the International Climate Initiative (IKI) symbiotic, which is helping integrate biodiversity considerations into national economic planning.
Additionally, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) a Korean-founded organizationis supporting Kenya in the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
Dr. Ng’eno reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to deepening collaboration with South Korea, noting that the partnership aligns with Kenya’s environmental priorities and the government’s broader green growth agenda.
The PS was accompanied by Dr. Selly Kimosop, Environment Secretary; Dr. Ayub Macharia of NEMA; and Mr. Molu Wato, Director of Waste Management, Mayiani Saino (Deputy Director, MEAs). #BeatPlasticPollution #CircularEconomy
We unpacked how businesses can shift from being extractive to being regenerative partners in our planetary system. It’s a conversation that’s urgent, necessary, and full of hope.
