The Union of Students in Ireland sends its deepest condolences and love to the family and friends of Stephen Grogan, former President of USI (1989-1990) whose funeral takes place today, Thursday
Stephen from county Mayo, also a former President of GMIT Students’ Union, played an important role in not only the student movement, but also in the battle to legalise abortion in Ireland, and a range of other social issues
Stephen bravely stood up for the right to information during a time when abortion was illegal in Ireland, even being named in a court case by an anti-choice organisation for doing so. His legacy will be long remembered

USI statement on violence at Coolock site
"The organisers of these protests, and the violence that took place yesterday, are using people’s genuine concerns about the housing crisis, the health service, and other matters to advance their racist...agenda and we will continue to call this out wherever we see it"

MSU President’s Award 2024 It is with deep admiration and heartfelt sympathy that I bestow this special honour upon the beloved Nicole Byrne. As a celebration of her legacy, I have selected Nicole as the recipient of the Maynooth Students’ Union President’s Award 2024.
Nicole was an exceptional student at Maynooth University, pursuing her degree in Science Education with unparalleled dedication. Despite facing daunting challenges, she displayed remarkable courage and unwavering determination. Her spirit and commitment to completing her degree
in the face of such overwhelming adversity were truly extraordinary. During her time at Maynooth, I had the privilege of meeting Nicole on numerous occasions. I was profoundly moved by her positivity, resilience, and steadfast focus on her goals.
Nicole’s ability to maintain her determination and spirit despite significant obstacles left a lasting impression on all who knew her, including me. When Nicole tragically lost her battle with cancer in January, her story of strength and commitment left an indelible mark on the
hearts and minds of students and staff alike. Her inspiring perseverance continues to resonate deeply within the Maynooth community. In recognition of Nicole’s exceptional courage and determination, it is our great privilege to award her the MSU President’s Award for 2023-2024.
This award was presented to her family, in her memory Nicole’s incredible legacy. Her story will continue to inspire all those who knew her. With deepest sympathy and admiration, Alex Balfe MSU President Uachtarán AMLMN
