The neuroscience behind why some religious or cosmological people say they saw a divinity waiting for them at the point of death is fascinating.

As the brain loses oxygen, normal sensory processing breaks down. Memory, emotion, expectation and visual systems can produce incredibly vivid experiences.

For instance, a lifelong Christian may interpret that experience as Jesus, heaven, angels or a pearly gate.

An Igbo traditionalist may interpret that experience as Ala mmụọ (spirit world) or ndi iche (ancestors).

A Viking may interpret that experience as Odin or Valhalla.

The intriguing part is that even though neuroscience can explain how the brain could produce these experiences, it cannot prove whether the images seen by these dying people are actually there or hallucinations.

Science can study the brain activity surrounding a near-death experience.

It cannot currently answer the deeper question:

> Was the brain creating the experience—or experiencing something beyond the brain?

> Is consciousness something the brain produces—or something the brain participates in?

Pay attention to these signs:

1. When they constantly discourage you from maintaining close relationships with your friends and family.

2. When they keep promising marriage or a proposal but never take any genuine steps toward it.

3. When they always have financial emergencies and somehow, you’re expected to rescue them every time.

4. When their stories about their past, finances, work, or relationships keep changing.

5. When they become defensive, angry, or manipulative whenever you ask reasonable questions.

6. When they make you feel guilty for saying “no” or setting financial boundaries.

7. When they demand secrecy about the relationship or discourage you from letting trusted people know what’s happening.

8. When they consistently take from you. Your money, time, trust, and emotions without showing the same level of commitment or sacrifice.

9. When they’re always pressuring you for sex, making intimacy feel like an obligation rather than mutual desire.

10. When they constantly accuse you of cheating without evidence, using suspicion to control or manipulate you.

Ignore these signs at your own peril.
