I am deeply disappointed INEOS are cutting staff in Hull. My thoughts are with workers affected and their families. The reason for the closure lies in Westminster, and this government pursuing disastrous Net Zero policies that do not benefit our communities and cost local jobs.

As our energy system evolves, we need to make sure it works for local people too, supporting industry, protecting jobs, and helping people develop the skills they need.

Yesterday I met members of @humber_energy to discuss the role our region will play in the UK’s future #EnergySecurity.

The #Humber already powers much of the country, and we can build on that while cutting emissions, creating local jobs and helping bring down energy bills.

This region produces around 20% of the UK’s power, is home to around a third of the UK’s offshore wind capacity, and has hydrogen storage that could power 2 million homes for a year.

Great to attend the Youth Action Showcase at @BishopBurton last week, opening the event and meeting students.

The project sees them supporting their community while building valuable skills.

This extra support will help more people overcome barriers to work and take steps towards secure employment.

I’m really pleased that £11.7 million of new funding through the Connect to Work scheme is coming to our region, helping thousands of disabled people and people with health conditions move towards secure, good jobs.

Alongside this, £200,000 from the Mayoral Investment Fund has been committed to help cover transport costs for people who secure employment through the programme.

After last week’s disappointing Northern Powerhouse Transport announcement from the Government, I have written to the Chancellor Rachel Reeves, co-signed by East Riding Council Leader Ann Handley, to ask the Chancellor if she will meet with us to discuss rail funding for #Hull & #EastYorkshire.
I am also inviting other stakeholders to have detailed conversations with me about our area’s rail and transport strategies.
I will keep you posted on my progress.

It was great to attend the Humber Freeport meeting. It is clear that there are lots of people who are passionate about our region and its future success. By collaborating we will be able to create a new vision together to unlock Hull & East Yorkshire’s potential.

I was at the ceremony for future health workers, who’ll soon be making a real difference in our communities and beyond.
