I’m no genius when it comes to cryptocurrency or forex. But I beg you—no matter how much you think you know, no matter what anyone tells you—never invest more than 10% of your income.

Some ventures, no matter how much money you pour in, can never offer true financial security. They can crumble in a single day. One day!

That kind of volatility is unacceptable to me.

If it’s as great as they claim, 10% should be more than enough. Better yet, avoid it altogether. The dopamine rush from gains is no different from gambling—you’ll always want to risk more.

But hey, it’s your money. Do as you please. Just the musings of a simple man. Bye o.

I’ve been seeing this discourse about Nigerian talent and just really thinking on it. This makes sense why I’ve had a few junior devs or folks in the tech space really doubt the experience they can get in Nigeria.

I agree that limitations exist but don’t let this be the reason you don’t take ownership of your career as a Nigerian working in the Nigerian tech space.

Here’s my winning playbook:
1️⃣ Attend international virtual conferences,
2️⃣ Read company blogs,
3️⃣ Learn as much as you can about how global companies do things,
4️⃣ Find ways to execute wherever you find yourself. (This is very key!)
5️⃣ If you can, find orgs in your home country that value engineering excellence so you can learn from peers

That way you’ll be building not only relevant skills but globally relevant skills.

Also, a true marker of growth especially is when you’re able to improve technology or processes rather than just building or maintaining what you’re asked.

A lot of the skills I’ve gained in my career come from the foundation I got working in Nigeria. I would attend @datadoghq and @pagerduty conferences at the time, see what companies were doing and work with my team to execute. In fact, I made my team watch those same talks so they got the vision clearly as well.

I still vividly remember talks from folks at orgs Vodafone and Duolingo a few years ago and how I used those learnings to improve Incident Response & Observability at Paystack.

These are the same things I referenced in interviews that have me an attractive candidate regardless of the countries I’ve applied to.

Keep learning and building and the right opportunities will show up. ❤️

At about 2 pm, yesterday’s afternoon, I wanted to take a nap but felt this sudden rush of unease. Sleep wouldn’t come. Even after a few attempts of animating my eyes to force the sleep, they stubbornly remained wide open and pacing.

I was alone in the house, lying on the couch, in the parlour. The Arise TV Channel was on but my troubled mind was too restless to pay attention. I just couldn’t explain the feeling. It came suddenly and strangely.
