1. The Health Ministry plans to issue new directives for COVID-19 booster jabs soon, especially for those in vulnerable groups, says Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad.
The take-up rate for the 2nd booster stands at 54%, while the rate for the 3rd booster is quite low, he adds.
1. Companies that allow remote work have recorded revenue growth 4 times faster than those that are more strict about office attendance, a new survey by Scoop Technologies finds.
This may be due to a culture of high employee trust in remote work settings, says its CEO Rob Sadow.
🧵 Amy:
Certainly, my father was against antisemitism, as am I.
He also believed militarism (along with racism and poverty) to be among the interconnected Triple Evils.
I am certain he would call for Israel’s bombing of Palestinians to cease, for hostages to be released…
Most foreign correspondents for major media outlets - myself included - have the luxury of being able to leave an assignment when things get too dangerous. Every photo + video in our news media from Gaza this week is taken by someone who cannot escape. https://t.co/2AvEF43fNY
1. A survey on Malaysian doctors conducted by MMA finds that 30-40% of doctors across all states, from both public and private healthcare, are experiencing some form of bullying.
The MMA also found that most of the doctors were reported to be overworked.
Jamaludin Jarjis family feud to inherite RM2.2 bil wealth is a good time to talk about the reintroduction of the Wealth and Inheritance Tax in Malaysia. (For the purpose of this tweet, I’m going to ignore how the deceased accumulated such wealth in the first place).
Widen the tax base and start taxing on capital, not just on labour.
Prior to the abolition of this tax in 1991, estate duty was applicable only if the net worth of the estate exceeded RM2 million. Rates then were 5% to 10%.
For comparison… here are top-end of inheritance tax rates globally:
Japan 55%
South Korea 50%
France 45%
United Kingdom 40%
United States 40%
If reintroduction of GST is unavoidable, surely the reintroduction inheritance tax is unavoidable too?
The problem of AGC is that there is very little oversight and accountability.
I have said this many times, the office of Public Prosecutor needs to be separated from the Attorney General. What's stopping PHBN govt from doing it?
Come on, at least give us a timeline.
I am a former prosecutor, experienced criminal law practitioner and worked for the ministers. Yet, they did that to me.
Are you really surprised why the conviction rate for sexual offences in Malaysia is so low?
I'll never forget how no action was taken against police officer who deliberately damaged the prosecution case, or cases, included rape, that were threw out by the court because the prosecutor who was in charge 'forgot' to notify witnesses to attend trial.
As a former prosecutor of Attorney General's Chambers, I know many good men & women in the AGC that sacrifice their personal life to serve the country.
But something is rotten in the state of Denmark. It is high time to reform AGC for more transparency and accountability.
Over at the AGC, The Star reports that AG Idrus Harun has gone on leave ahead of his retirement next week.
He appears to have left the chamber in shambles, with the prosecution failing to file appeal papers, and mired by alleged leaks.
A mess for his successor to clean up.
1. WWF Malaysia's camera traps have taken the first images of orangutans in the forests of Gunung Lesong, Sarawak.
"One of the images shows a mother orangutan with her baby, which is a sign that the population is still breeding in this area," says field biologist Lukmann Haqeem.
Malaysiakini readers not happy that we said PN is the biggest winners in these elections. 🫠
But when you look at the vote share, PN's grew almost across the board.
