TMC and #IGTWG reveal how these platforms, now the backbone of youth livelihoods and SME growth, are being disrupted despite national goals for a digital economy.

Inside the Brief:
✴ Internet disruptions in early 2024 cost Tanzania an estimated USD 1.4 million
✴ Over 150 days of X shutdown (May-Oct 2025) cost USD 149.8 million / TZS 352B
✴ Digital creators losing engagements, brand deals, and contracts overnight
✴ SMEs, especially women-led, are unable to market, sell, or communicate with customers
✴ VPN use distorts platform algorithms, making content invisible and collapsing online income
✴ Contradiction between Digital Tanzania's ambitions and restrictive regulatory practices
This is a call to government, regulators, tech platforms, civil society, and investors to protect digital livelihoods and ensure platform access remains open, predictable, and economically enabling.

On 23rd October, TMC was represented by our Policy and Program Coordinator, Janet J. Kahindi, at the Women’s Seminar on Gender, Election Security & Justice, organized by Women in Law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF) Tanzania at King Jada Hotel, Dar es Salaam.

The seminar convened key stakeholders from civil society, government institutions, election authorities, and security organs to deliberate on strengthening gender-responsive mechanisms in electoral processes ensuring women’s participation, safety, and access to justice ahead of the 2025 General Elections.
