Thunderbolts in formation – an “only at Oshkosh” moment that almost didn’t happen!
Three years of collaboration brought together a 1944 P-47D Thunderbolt and a 1978 A-10 Thunderbolt II, connecting more than 80 years of aviation history above #OSH25.
Read the story behind this historic formation in the August 2026 issue of Sport Aviation, available today.

Jet takeoff in formation.
Flying these @NASA T-38N jets was huge fun, as well as great crew preparation for spaceflight: complex systems, emergencies, discipline, communications, 3D maneuvering, navigation, unforgiving operations.
You can see the detonation cord to shatter the canopy above our heads in case we have to eject.
During my 21 years as an astronaut I logged about 1500 T-38 hours, front & backseat.

The German Arado Ar 196 holds a truly bizarre record in naval history as one of the only aircraft to ever capture a submarine.
In May 1940, the British submarine HMS Seal became trapped in a minefield in the Kattegat strait. After sustaining heavy damage, the sub was forced to surface, unable to dive or escape.
Two German Arado Ar 196 floatplanes spotted the vulnerable vessel from above. Instead of just reporting the position, the pilots immediately attacked with bombs and strafed the deck with their 20mm cannons.
With his steering gear wrecked and no way to submerge, the British commander did the unthinkable. He waved a white mess cloth, signaling surrender to the circling aircraft. One of the Arado pilots actually landed his floatplane on the water next to the submarine, taxied over, and took the British captain aboard as a prisoner.
History takes flight once again! ✈️
The only active flying reproduction of the Messerschmitt Me 262, the world’s first operational jet fighter, visited Oshkosh for AirVenture 2025. Keeping White 3 authentic to the original aircraft came with issues – mainly the vintage brakes and system – but they were fixed just in time for the 1,000-mile flight from @AvMuseumVB to Oshkosh.
You can read more about getting White 3 back in the air in the July/August 2026 edition of Warbirds. ➡️ https://t.co/GGbSHxsTcm

"While spacewalking I realized something, I used to think I was scared of heights but now I know I was just scared of gravity" ― NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman
