The Journalism Warriors strongly condemn the recent manhandling and assault on journalists at the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) headquarters.
We, the Journalism Warriors — the fearless voices fighting for truth, transparency, and accountability — unequivocally condemn the shameful high-handedness shown by SMC marshals and police personnel against media representatives on or around June 11-12, 2026.
What Happened
Journalists had gathered at SMC headquarters to question Municipal Commissioner M. Nagarajan and other officials about the highly controversial Nasirnagar “ghost demolition” of over 100 homes in Surat’s Katargam area. Instead of facing the media with answers, officials allegedly fled the briefing. When journalists tried to seek clarification and perform their constitutional duty, marshals and police resorted to pushing, shoving (dhakka-mukki), and physical manhandling.
Videos of the ugly scuffle have gone viral. Senior police officers had to rush to the spot as tensions escalated. Media personnel were forced to stage a protest outside SMC headquarters against this blatant attempt to intimidate and silence the press.
Our Stand
This is not just an attack on a few journalists — it is an attack on the Fourth Pillar of Democracy.
In a democratic republic, journalists are not adversaries of the administration. They are warriors who hold power accountable, expose irregularities, and give voice to the people. Manhandling journalists for asking questions on a public-interest issue like an alleged unauthorized demolition is unacceptable, undemocratic, and dangerous.
We demand:
Immediate suspension and strict departmental action against the marshals and officials involved in the manhandling.
Registration of FIR against those responsible for the assault on journalists.
An unconditional public apology from the Surat Municipal Commissioner.
Full facilitation and protection for media to report freely without fear or intimidation.
A transparent, time-bound inquiry into both the Nasirnagar demolition controversy and this shameful incident at SMC headquarters.
Silencing journalists will not hide the truth. It will only expose those who fear accountability. The Journalism Warriors stand in complete solidarity with our colleagues in Surat and across Gujarat. We will not be pushed, shoved, or silenced.
Press freedom is non-negotiable.Surat
Truth will prevail.

Journalism Warriors is a collective initiative by Indian journalists, created to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow journalists whenever they face trouble.
In an era where speaking truth often invites pressure, legal harassment, threats, professional isolation, or personal hardship, no journalist should have to fight alone. Journalism Warriors exists as a fraternity of solidarity — built by journalists, for journalists — to ensure that when one of us is targeted or troubled, the entire community rises in support.
In the demanding world of Indian journalism, courage often comes at a cost. Reporters, editors, and correspondents across the country routinely face legal cases, threats to life and liberty, professional victimization, mental stress, and attempts to silence their voices. Journalism Warriors was born from the simple yet powerful belief that journalists must protect their own.
We are a growing collective of experienced and passionate Indian journalists from diverse regions, languages, and media platforms. Bound by our shared commitment to ethical journalism and press freedom, we have come together to create a strong, responsive support network that activates the moment a colleague is in distress.
Journalism Warriors stands for:
Immediate Solidarity — Moral, emotional, and professional support when a journalist is under pressure
Advocacy & Amplification — Raising collective voices to defend press freedom and highlight attacks on journalists
Peer Network — Connecting journalists with trusted legal guidance, mental health resources, and experienced peers who understand the unique challenges of the profession
Unity in Crisis — Mobilizing the fraternity to ensure no journalist feels abandoned or isolated during troubled times
We are not a formal funding agency or a bureaucratic body. We are a movement of conscience and brotherhood — journalists who refuse to let their colleagues stand alone when truth becomes a battleground.
Whether the trouble is legal, physical, professional, or emotional, Journalism Warriors exists with one clear promise: When you are in trouble, we are with you.
Because the strength of Indian journalism lies not just in individual courage, but in our unbreakable collective will to protect those who protect democracy.

My sister flew with @IndiGo6E and they broke her bag. The bag is a Mokobara bag that I got at around 8k.
They are offering her a safari bag or 4500 INR as per their policy. What kind of policy is this. Consumer safety is a joke in this nation. @DGCAIndia ??
