Former Prime Minister, Dr Ruhakana Rugunda @RuhakanaR , has paid a moving tribute to Alice Kakuru one of the founders of the Uganda Patriotic Movement – UPM in Kigezi Sub region in the 1980s for the role she played (with her late husband) in the liberation of the country.
Alice Kakuru died on Sunday at her home in Ruhita Kijuguta Ward in Kabale Municipality aged 80.
Speaking at the requiem mass held at St. James Kijuguta Church of Uganda as Chief Guest, Dr. Rugunda said the deceased, like her late husband, sacrificed to bring the ruling NRM into power.
“We thank her for the role she played and the sacrifice she made for the liberation of our country. She strongly supported her husband, the late Henry Kakuru, who was the founding Chairman of UPM in Kigezi, “ Dr Rugunda said yesterday.
According to Dr. Rugunda, the deceased mothered, nurtured and prepared her heroic ‘sin’ in Major Aziz Bey Kwesiga who was the pioneer fighter during the NRA bush war. Rugunda says Maj. Kwesiga was also a close confidant of the Chairman of the High Command, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
He described the deceased as a consistent and dependable pillar of movement who contributed a lot for a united and peaceful Uganda.
“That is what Alice, Kakuru and Maj. Aziz Bey Kwesiga struggled to achieve,” he said.

After victory, Major Aziz Bey continued serving in intelligence roles with quiet professionalism until his passing in 1996. As we commemorate #45thTareheSita in Kabale, we proudly recognise him as one of the soldiers who secured our freedom.

Known as Aziz Bey, he earned the deep trust of senior leadership, serving among 1st bodyguards under the late Gen. Fred Rwigyema &rising to Commander, Section4 of the High Command. He was uniquely entrusted with the blue scooter (UYP410) used to transport Chairman @KagutaMuseveni
We honor Tarehe Sita, a reminder of the courage & sacrifice that forged our nation. Marching forward with honor, we salute those who defend peace, stability, and progress. Together, we uphold the legacy of service and patriotism. PROUDLY ASSOCIATED!
