America has spent sums of money on its military that would make God blush. Trillions of dollars, poured lovingly into aircraft carriers, stealth bombers and enough nuclear warheads to vaporise the solar system out of sheer spite.

All of it designed to stop the Soviets, frighten the Chinese, and presumably deal with any aliens foolish enough to invade a country with more guns than teeth.

And it worked, sort of, right up until Putin deployed the one weapon nobody at the Pentagon had thought to plan for: a man lounging on floral bedding in a dressing gown, looking like a prawn that’s given up on life.

Decades of intelligence briefings, and not one analyst raised his hand to say “what if the threat is already indoors, and comfortable?”

Because that’s the genius of it. Moscow never needed to launch anything. They just needed America to look at this and think, “yes, him, that’s our guy.” Trillions spent defending the nation, and it turns out the whole thing could be conquered with a bathrobe and a quilted bedspread.
