On This Day — July 10, 1941

Their Polish neighbors did it.

In Jedwabne, Poland, roughly 1,600 Jews — virtually the entire Jewish population — were rounded up by local Poles and peasants from surrounding villages. Not the Germans (who had only a token presence that day).

The victims were beaten and tortured, then herded into a barn, doused with kerosene, and burned alive.

Men, women, and children screamed as their Polish neighbors watched.

This was one of many methodical massacres of entire Jewish communities carried out by ordinary locals across the former Soviet-occupied territories once the Germans arrived in 1941.

Jan Gross’s book Neighbors forced Poland to confront the horrific truth: in Jedwabne, half the town murdered the other half.

Some of the worst atrocities of the Holocaust weren’t committed only by Nazi death squads — but by the very people Jews had lived beside for generations.
