@OilfieldSlang@mtmrk03@dilanesper There are good reasons to get an epidural and good reasons to skip it. I wouldn’t conflate that choice with avoiding necessary medical attention during birth.
@MercuriusFilius Start both. When the four minute runs out, turn the seven minute over. When that runs out four minutes later, use the four minute a final time. 4x3=12
@jonathanbfine Where did she do her undergraduate work? If you don’t want to name names, please give us a sense. Some colleges seem to be an extension of middle-school book reports.
@asymmetricinfo How do we count people who are literate in their native language but not in English? It matters for public policy initiatives if 5% of your adult population reads Spanish and not English, but it’s not an inducement of the school system.
Maybe SCOTUS will take the Commonwealth of Virginia’s redistricting appeal and certify the question on Virginia constitutional law to the Supreme Court of Virginia.
@OrinKerr Better to identify and describe or explore the source of the disagreement. Many stem from different factual priors. I love an article that says, if X is true, Y. For those who believe Not X, W follows more naturally.
@Bwilly90@dilanesper It’s not about respecting the speaker. We have to respect the would-be listener. It’s easy to protest without interfering with the audience’s ability to listen and engage.
@dilanesper Can you say more about what you see as the right of center view of sex? Most people on the right I know: Sex should be in committed relationships, above all certain age, with consent. The long term goal is monogamy in marriage, but few expect virginity on the wedding day.
@an_average_bear@dilanesper I named the two main signals, which is not denying or forgetting the rest. Even a brilliant writing sample won’t be read unless the applicant makes it to the finals.
@dilanesper I will promote my top students regardless of legal philosophy, to be clear. But some left profs view all students on the right as inherently intellectually inferior or possibly dangerous.
@dilanesper Students applying for clerkships have two main signals: grades and prof recs. When 98.2% of your professors are far left, Fed Soc types don’t always get the prof recs they should. Fed Soc helps identify top candidates because there is a need—the judges need more info.
@anup_malani@GalorOded Joseph Heinrich’s “The WEIRDest People in the World” is, among other things, a fascinating look at how testing for universal traits of human nature using Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) college students will be misleading.
@asymmetricinfo I’m sure that’s true, but I stand by my view that most journalists should be historians. That would solve almost everything. Instead, many are the opposite of historians—policy majors who are excited by “new” ideas.
