Madlanga Reveals Why He Refused to Comment Publicly on the Commission’s Explosive Proceedings as Fort Hare Honours Him With a New International Moot Court Competition
Retired acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga has explained his decision to remain silent outside the courtroom while chairing the high-profile Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. Madlanga was honoured by the University of Fort Hare during the launch of the Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga International Moot Court Competition.
The University of Fort Hare Faculty of Law launched the competition as an initiative aimed at strengthening law students’ research, writing, advocacy and critical-thinking skills through experiential learning. Madlanga said he was deeply honoured by the recognition but stressed that the platform should focus on developing future lawyers rather than celebrating him.
Madlanga encouraged participating students to eventually consider joining the judiciary and contribute to keeping South Africa’s legal system strong. He has been serving as chairperson of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating critical public-sector matters, including allegations of corruption within the South African Police Service and the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption.
The commission’s public hearings have attracted significant public attention because of revelations made during proceedings. However, Madlanga said his decision to make no public comments about the commission was deliberate from the outset, describing the silence as a strict professional boundary intended to protect the integrity and impartiality of the inquiry.
