The Challenges of Political Leadership in Kenya: A Call for Deeper Reflection

Kenya’s electorate often exhibits highly transactional tendencies. Voters frequently assess aspirants primarily through financial lenses, profess loyalty during campaigns, yet readily shift allegiances when new opportunities arise- frequently irrespective of the substance or feasibility of proposed policies and manifestos.

This dynamic has unfortunately discouraged many individuals of high integrity and competence from entering electoral politics. The perceived ethical compromises and short-term opportunism create an environment where principled leaders question the value of engagement, resulting in a persistent pattern of voters choosing among the “lesser evils” each cycle.

Equally significant is the prevailing political discourse. Campaigns dominated by emotional appeals, ethnic rhetoric, insults, and slogans often overshadow issue-based dialogue and policy depth. Leaders who prioritize coherent strategies and institutional protocols frequently struggle to maintain audience attention in a communication landscape that rewards spectacle over substance.

Additionally, emotional and unpredictable voting patterns complicate long-term leadership. Building effective governance requires stable teams, shared vision, measurable milestones, and mutual accountability. Persistent shifts in support undermine strategic implementation, leaving even committed leaders operating in circles rather than advancing systemic change.

Many principled individuals, who view leadership as a responsibility to address societal needs rather than a personal pursuit, ultimately allocate their time, expertise, and resources to domains offering greater predictability and impact.

Tribal politics further compounds these challenges, reducing national issues to zero-sum ethnic contests and hindering the development of inclusive, merit-based institutions.

Addressing these issues demands a collective shift toward greater civic maturity: Prioritizing character and competence, fostering issue-based engagement, and strengthening voter education. Kenya’s youth, professionals, and emerging middle class are particularly well-positioned to champion this evolution by demanding higher standards and rewarding consistent, results-oriented leadership.

Sustainable democracy requires not only better leaders, but also a more discerning and accountable electorate.

Parliament wants to kill the IEBC livestream of election results.

The Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 is set to delete the legal requirement for live streaming of results as they’re announced at polling stations.

That safeguard existed for a reason. After 2007, Kenyans demanded to see the numbers in real time so no one could quietly doctor the outcome. Now they’re trying to take it away.And Kenyans are already threatening protests if it passes because it's another clear signal that those in power no longer feel the need to be transparent with the people who elect them.

This is what zero trust looks like. When the public’s first reaction to any move by Parliament is “they’re preparing to rig,” it means the institution has completely lost legitimacy.

You don’t remove a basic transparency tool unless you’re afraid of what the public might see.

Kenyans didn’t fight for a Constitution so Parliament could slowly dismantle every safeguard that makes elections credible.

If they push this through, the streets will answer.
