Rangers has condemned a banner displayed at Ibrox reading: “Keep woke foreign ideologies out. Defend Europe.” In a statement, the Scottish Premiership club revealed that UEFA has launched disciplinary proceedings over the banner, describing it as “racist and/or discriminatory”.

Rangers went further, and in an extraordinary step, publicly told dissenting fans that “Rangers is not the club for you”. The club also vowed to “identify those responsible and ensure they… face consequences”.

Consequences for what? Intellectual dissent from divisive ideas imported from the grievance studies departments of US academia? How does opposing an ideology amount to racism? The banner clearly targets ideas, not people. That UEFA is investigating fans for expressing a political view is deeply concerning. That Rangers is not only accepting UEFA’s position but actively working to punish its own supporters is even more troubling.
