The notion that we want children to “enter kindergarten ready to learn” is badly outdated. Ready to succeed, yes. Ready to meet state standards, sure. But learning does not begin at age 5. It begins in utero. We ignore the early years at taxpayers’ peril - and pay more later.

Parents: If your child DOESN’T periodically come home from preschool with stained clothing (from paint, markers, playground dirt), you should really find them a better preschool. Don’t get mad. Just dress accordingly.
