CONSCIENCE

While as the first tabernacle was yet standing: Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience. . . . How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? — HEBREWS 9:8,9,14

Is your conscience a safe guide?

Yes it is, if your spirit has become a new man in Christ. Remember Second Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

That’s talking about the inward man, the spirit of man. Your conscience is the voice of your spirit speaking to you. If your spirit is a new man in Christ, with the life and nature of God in it, then it is a safe guide.

A person who has never been born again could not follow the voice of his spirit, or conscience, because his unregenerate spirit would have the nature of the devil in it. His conscience would permit him to do anything.

When you have the life and nature of God in you, your conscience will not permit you to do just anything. When you are a born-again Christian, the Spirit of God is living and abiding in your spirit!

Confession:
I am a new man in Christ, with the life and nature of God abiding in my spirit. Therefore, my conscience is a safe guide.

Healed by Faith—Power

That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.—1 CORINTHIANS 2:5

Imogene’s mother, Mrs. Alexander, finally spoke up and said, “Imogene, I’d be careful if I were you. Maybe Kenneth knows something that we don’t know. When he was bedfast, I remember the doctor said, ‘That young man has the strongest willpower of any person I’ve ever seen in my life. He should have been dead months ago. I don’t know how he’s lived. I’ll give him ninety days at the most.’”

Well, those ninety days have stretched into more than sixty-five years! I wasn’t healed by willpower. I was healed by faith-power. Don’t substitute willpower for faith-power. You can go a while on willpower if you’re strong-willed, but it will break sooner or later.

I do know something about faith. It has worked for me for more than sixty-five years. It’s not that I’m so smart. I just read it in the Bible. And I can share what I’ve learned with you.

I went home that night and went to bed praising God because I was healed. I got up the next morning, and my face was straight. I went to the Alexanders’ house and had a bowl of cereal for breakfast. I was grinning from ear to ear!

Imogene said, “Oh, I see you got your healing.”

I said, “Yes, I got it last night when Pastor anointed me with oil and prayed.”

She said, “Well, you didn’t have it when you left here.”

You see, if I had been walking by that kind of faith, it never would have materialized. Her kind of faith does not call things that be not as though they were.

Confession:
I don’t base my faith on what I see or feel. I don’t base my faith on what other people think. I base my faith on God’s Word. There is power in the Word of God.

NUMBER TWO: THE INWARD VOICE

I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost. — ROMANS 9:1

The number one way the Holy Spirit guides us is through the inward witness. The number two way is through the inward voice.

The inward man has a voice just as the outward man has a voice. We call the voice of the inward man “conscience.” Sometimes it is also called intuition, inner guidance, or “the still, small voice.” It is not the voice of the Spirit of God speaking to us, because when the Holy Spirit speaks, His voice is more authoritative. The still, small voice is the voice of our own spirit. Yet our spirit picks it up from the Holy Spirit who lives inside us.

For example, I relate in the devotion of July 19 how a “buzzer” seemed to go off inside me as I stepped inside that building that was for sale in Tulsa. I knew on the inside — This is it! But I didn’t want to listen. When my wife asked about it later, I said, “No, we’ll just stay where we are.” But when we went to bed that night, I couldn’t get to sleep. My conscience was hurting. My spirit knew I hadn’t listened to it.

So I said, “Lord, in the natural, I don’t want to move to Tulsa. But if that’s what You want, I won’t stand in Your way.” Suddenly, on the inside of me, that still, small voice said, “I’m going to give you that building. You watch Me.” And God did just that!

Confession:
I listen to the voice of my spirit. And I obey it!

The Prayer of Faith

And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.—JAMES 5:15

Notice that this scripture says, “The prayer of faith will save the sick.” It’s not the anointing with oil that does it. It’s not the elders’ hands or even the elders. It’s the prayer of faith that does it. You can pray that prayer as well as anyone can.

Many people reason that if they don’t get healed after someone lays hands on them, anoints them with oil, and prays, then the person who ministered to them didn’t pray the prayer of faith. What is the prayer of faith?

Let’s substitute God’s definition of faith in Hebrews 11:1 for the word “faith” in this scripture. In other words, “The prayer of the evidence of things not seen will heal the sick.” Or we could substitute Romans 4:17 in there: “The prayer that calls those things that be not as though they were will heal the sick.” That’s what the prayer of faith is. It’s the prayer of the evidence of things not seen.

The prayer of faith doesn’t say, “Look and see if you’re healed. If you are, that’s how you’ll know if you prayed the prayer of faith.” No, the prayer of faith sees with the eye of faith and counts it done. Faith calls those things that be not as though they were.

I saw this as a Baptist boy, and I started preaching it as a Baptist boy. And I got results. Then the Full Gospel people came to town, held a revival, and built a church. I found out that they believed in divine healing, and I was thrilled about it. I had people to fellowship with around faith and divine healing.

Confession:
I can pray the prayer of faith and get results. I can pray the prayer of “the evidence of things not seen”—the prayer that calls those things that be not as though they were. I can call my body well and whole in Jesus’ Name.
