Lessons from the literal “Rise” of Pico Lopes.

The World Cup is now a distant memory and Spain are Champions of the 23rd edition after their 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina.

While Ireland obviously didn’t qualify for the tournament extending our World Cup qualifying drought from 2002.

Our own Pico Lopes played a substantial role in arguably the story of the tournament playing at the heart of the Cape Verde defence.

Which held both finalists to draws in 90 mins including a clean sheet against eventual winners Spain.

Pico’s performances were not just top class but borderline world class at times and that’s not even being hyperbolic.

For that he’s received not just national praise but international acclaim and justifiably so and even if the LinkedIn narrative is borderline disrespectful it’s far better he’s getting recognition as he deserves it.

He’s helped platform our “little league” onto the global sphere and as I’ve said I think that’ll do wonders for the perception of the LOI globally.

My issue is with the reaction closer to home.

Politicians quick to roll out the red carpet for him praising his achievements and making political statements.

But we will still have to grovel and beg for every single cent we receive of “funding” for Irish Football from grassroots to the League of Ireland.

Our National Broadcaster fawning over his achievements and putting him front and centre of the TV and Radio.

But have provably next to no interest in actually covering our Domestic Game. I guess the inevitable Late Late Show appearance will have to do?

People who will criticise the FAI for not “capping” for Ireland as he’s “clearly better than what we have”.

But wouldn’t be caught dead attending a LOI game and would rather fly themselves for hundreds across to the UK and Scotland to follow “their” team.

Are You Paying Attention Yet?

I’m not saying the achievements are comparable but I saw a similar fanfare with the Stephanie Roche Puskas Goal all those years ago.

Did it lead to any tangible change in support? No It was just another gimmick for clout.

An incredible story but LOI journalists must continue to cover every niche story because they’re infinite.

Pico Lopes, who was born in Ireland, received a Linkedin message in Portuguese asking if he wanted to play for Cape Verde.

Not understanding it, he ignored the message for nine months until he was sent the message again in English.

Now he’s kept a clean sheet vs Spain 👏

Seeing how a lot of the World Cup stadiums in the USA are makeshift NFL stadiums, I say Ireland needs to push a bid for a World Cup. Who doesn't want to see Netherlands vs Uruguay in Clones or Argentina vs Norway in Thurles?
