A man who spent months in space returned to Earth saying that humans are living a lie…
Former NASA astronaut Ron Garan spent 178 days aboard the International Space Station, orbiting the globe nearly 3,000 times.
During this mission, he experienced the Overview Effect, a profound cognitive shift that occurs when viewing Earth from space.
From his vantage point, the political boundaries and economic systems that dominate human discourse were invisible. Instead, he saw a singular, iridescent biosphere protected only by a gossamer-thin atmosphere, highlighting the extreme vulnerability of the only home humanity has ever known.
Garan now warns that our perceived separation from nature is a dangerous illusion. He argues that issues like climate change and habitat loss are not separate problems but symptoms of a failure to recognize Earth as an interconnected system.
Since returning to the surface, his mission has shifted to promoting a planet-first mentality. By viewing the world as a shared vessel rather than a collection of competing territories, Garan believes we can better protect the delicate balance that sustains life within our paper-thin atmosphere.

Writing is my passion and my mission, but it is also my job, what puts food on the table. Supporting my Substack by becoming a paying subscriber ensures I can continue to critique, expose and illuminate in a time when the darkness is all around us ❤️✌🏽💀🌱
For centuries, we’ve been taught to see each other as enemies, to rage over labels, while those in power watch and profit. The rare act of courage is simple: stop fighting over sides, and remember to be human first.
Don’t end up like this. Pick up one of my books today! Subscribe and support on Substack if you can. All my content is FREE because this polycrisis is too urgent to shove behind a paywall. But paid subscriptions help me continue to do what I do✌🏽

We spent decades fearing artificial intelligence, thinking it would take over & destroy us.
Turns out it’s just another tool by which we can waste huge amounts of energy & resources producing meaningless nonsense as we accelerate ever faster along the path to destroy ourselves.

As ecosystems crumble, economies decline >
As economies decline, people become less concerned about ecosystems >
This frees up economies to plunder more ecosystems >
& on it goes... our descent into #hell

The Price of "Progress"
They said we had to choose between the economy and the environment. We chose the economy.
Now we have luxurious skyscrapers, sleek cars, and vast fortunes. And we carry oxygen tanks to walk between them. #Development#Sustainability
“Understanding how Earth’s climate works during a climate crisis is like trying to learn how a car works by studying the only dishevelled example you have available, one where something new breaks every five minutes”

In 2022, Just Stop Oil activists Phoebe Plummer and Anna Holland threw soup on Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. The painting was protected behind glass and untouched. The frame was retouched for just £150 before the artwork was back on the wall that same day.
Yet both activists were handed prison sentences of nearly two years each. The judge even barred them from mentioning the climate crisis in their defence, punishing them not for the actual harm caused, but for the imagined risk of what might have happened.
Now compare that to hunting crimes. Throw foxes to a pack of hounds, or chase hares to exhaustion, and you are likely to walk away with a small fine or community service.
In Britain, the law comes down hardest not on those who destroy wildlife, but on those who dare to defend it.
THE GREATEST LIE EVER TOLD
Is that this planet, all its life, its land, ocean, air, ecosystems, wildlife, biodiversity can be used & exploited for the exclusive use of humans.
(Sorry folks, continuing along this path with renewable energy will fix nothing, just make it worse.)
The main, unavoidable impact of AI is to dramatically accelerate the rate at which humanity devours the earth. It greatly compounds the unsustainability of human civilization. Never mind the happy talk of those who profit from it.

Is this why humans are so scared of aliens? 👽💔
It is estimated that around 92 billion land animals are killed for food each year. On top of that, approximately two trillion fish are killed annually.
Maybe we should stop exploiting beings that we see as 'less than us' 🥲 just a thought 💭
Vultures crash → rabies surge. Prairie chickens slaughtered → locust plagues. Passenger pigeons lost → ticks thrive.
Humanity has never learned anything from history.
