This afternoon I attended the moving ceremonies to honour victims of the genocide of Lithuanian Jews at Paneriai Memorial on the occasion of the national Holocaust Memorial Day.
Delighted to attend this afternoon the conference at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas entitled ‘The Role of Museums and Public Space in Remembering the Past’ and to hear the excellent presentation given by Ms Kate Turner, Director of ‘Healing through Remembering’ in Belfast.
Delighted that author Maggie O’Farrell has won the Novel of the Year award at the Dalkey Book Festival for her novel Hamnet. It’s available in Lithuanian translation, translated by Rasa Drazdauskiene and published by #Baltoslankos

Returned to Vilnius earlier this week after summer holidays in Ireland. One highlight - a visit to “Greenbank”, the house in Co. Donegal in which my father grew up in the 1930s. Seen here with Bernadette in the front garden.

Took time out this afternoon to see the wonderful exhibition ‘From Sacro to Profano: Paintings from the Giorgio Baratti Collection in Milan’ at the Grand Duke’s Palace in Vilnius. Paintings included the ‘Annunciation’ (1580) by Santi di Tito (Florence).
Final event of the day - reception this evening marking the birthday of the new Emperor of Japan. Many thanks to the Ambassador of Japan in Vilnius and Yuko Yamasaki for hosting!
Attended a moving memorial event at the Seimas this afternoon, led by the Speaker, to honour the memory of Chiune Sugihara, Japanese Consul in Kaunas, Lithuania 1939/40, who issued several thousand transit visas to people of Jewish origin, thus saving over 6,000 lives.
