UTAH RANKS 3RD IN NATION FOR MIGRANT ARRIVALS: Salt Lake City has emerged as one of the nation’s fastest-growing destinations for migrants, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data obtained by The Associated Press.

Nearly 2.5 million people who crossed the border illegally or crossed the border and gained legal protections through the CBP One app reported where they planned to live between May 12, 2023, and Jan. 18, 2025. Authorities collect addresses for anyone released into the U.S. with humanitarian protections or notices to appear in immigration court to pursue asylum.

Miami led all metropolitan areas per capita with 2,191 arrivals for every 100,000 residents. Fort Myers, Florida, followed with 1,782. Salt Lake City was next with 1,685, edging out Denver at 1,673 and New York at 1,542.

The figures cover a period that began when the Biden administration lifted COVID-19 asylum restrictions and ended as Donald Trump entered his second term and declared a national emergency at the border.
While the data may not reflect where immigrants ultimately settle, it offers a rare glimpse into shifting migration trends. It also highlights how cities outside traditional gateways, like Salt Lake City and Denver, are absorbing significant numbers of newcomers even as California’s long-standing pull has diminished.
