What a fabulous first Shenzhen Team Maths!!(https://t.co/jkM7GgfAzG)
13 teams from 4 schools came to Harrow International School Shenzhen to pit their wits in 4 rounds of gruelling questions! Firstly was the group round, an opportunity of warming up the brain with 10 questions. Following on, the relay, the shuttle and the crossnumber.
It was great to see the team work and tactics used by each team!!
Followed by the “Heroes of Maths and Music” by @mcmathscomm, HoD Maths at Harrow Shenzhen; looking at the role Pythagoras had in the birth of music, and the Topology of Bach’s Puzzle Canons.
Huge congratulations to SWIS for winning the overall competition, to HIS Shenzhen for an overall 3rd place and a huge shout out to the Maths Team at Harrow Shenzhen for their outstanding event running and tech support.

After running HSTM from 2015-2023, and experiencing the community building, the enrichment opportunities for students and for staff, I wanted to re-ignite these key opportunities and experiences in Shenzhen. It therefore gives me great pleasure to start the Shenzhen Middle Schools Team Maths Competition.
Whilst in its embryonic stages, it will launch on 1 June 2024 at Harrow Shenzhen.
As well as four rounds of team based maths competitions. visiting teachers will experience several hours of Professional Learning, focusing on interdisciplinary learning and differentiation through low floor, high ceiling activities.
Students and staff will also explore the Heroes of Maths and music
VERY excited by this and the energy and drive from the other founding teachers is fabulous!!!

Pathways created based on where and what the learner wants to be at university and in the workplace. Genuinely excited by what the maths team at #harrowshenzhen are creating for our learners. Reap the benefits when our current Y9 graduate in 2028!#mixandmatchcurriculum

A friend of mine recently sent me their “Lament of a HoD”- They have two sections written 9 months apart. After a change of employer. I love how they have used the same sentence starters in each. For me it highlights several things.
1. Teams and schools are unique, what works in one context to develop a team, might not necessarily work in another
2. Sometimes, cutting your losses and applying your leadership values in a different context is refreshing.
3. The culture of the team is essential. That comes not just from within, but also needs to be endemic across the whole faculty. One HoD can’t do that alone.
4. The first section is always starting as “I’m told that” - is this the perception of senior leaders or the team? Or is it one vocal team member who’s voice is heard louder than the rest?
Some interesting points to reflect on.
Here are my friends thoughts.
———————————————
Lament of a HoD
I gave my team the courses they excel in and enjoy teaching and picked up the rest; yet I’m told they resented me for having non exam classes.
I picked up administrative tasks so my team could focus on teaching and learning; yet I’m told they resented my lower timetable and room changes.
I gave my team courses so they could grow and develop with my care and support; yet I’m told I’m out of touch with what it’s like at the chalkface.
I put my team’s wellbeing before my own; yet I’m told my team’s low wellbeing is my fault.
——
I give my team the courses they excel in and enjoy teaching and picked up the rest;and they enjoy the classes and courses they are given.
I pick up administrative tasks so my team could focus on teaching and learning; and they excel in their teaching and learning, reaching out when I need help, understanding the tasks behind the scenes.
I give my team courses so they could grow and develop with my care and support; and we support each other with pedagogy and skills, understanding that we are at the cutting edge of the chalkface.
I put my team’s wellbeing before my own; and we support each other through the difficult patches and rejoice our successes. They look out for me.
