@poleary19 @DownGoesBrown Yup. That’s the problem with this theory - at least in this instance (I.e. basing it on a comparison to Gibson). Give this deal to Blackwood pre-trade and I don’t think it changes the market for him at all. If anything, there’s an argument the term increases acquisition cost.

@DarioinDenver @avrilanche I have to believe that the longer CMac waited, the more tempting free agency would have been for MB. Zero issue with the suggestion that there is risk involved, I’m just in the camp of this option being less risky than the alternative(s) (a point we may not actually disagree on).

@DarioinDenver @avrilanche Both options carry risk, but only option (ii) comes with the chance of getting a worthwhile starter at a below market price. And unless you draft and develop (hopefully Nabokov), you never get a starter at below market price without going option (ii) sooner or later.

The Avs had to grapple with competing risks: (i) wait, and risk not being able to get MB or any other worthwhile starter at a below market price (ie perpetual searching for an answer); or (ii) lock MB in now, and risk it being a slight over pay.

The point is that it is reasonable to expect all parts of the lineup to have better outcomes when playing with a “best in the league” award candidate than when playing without them. The opposite is happening - not determinative, but not irrelevant
