Pre-print on the evolution of great ape Y chromosomes, by @biomonika, @rahul_vegesna, and other colleagues & friends from the @MakovaLab & @pashadag group. Great work, all! ๐ฆ๐ฆง
Really excited to see our work on mosaic Y chromosome loss out today in @nature. Many thanks to all involved, and especially to all the @uk_biobank and @23andMe research participants who made this possible.

@pashadag I remember you saying exactly this in ~2013, during a BG program meet-the-faculty session Shashi had organized :) It has stuck with me ever since!
Many thanks to the Genome In A Bottle consortium for making their data from different sequencing platforms (including Illumina, PacBio, 10X) available, and for enabling us to take on a project like this! Sorry about the numbering on these tweets - this is the last one (10/10)
My final paper from grad school on identifying Y-chromosomal contigs from whole genome assemblies was published online last week- take a look if you're interested in sex chromosomes, genome assembly, or k-mer based methods.

Here's a quick summary (1/10):
Our approach was to combine the strengths of both these kinds of methods - by using both proportion sharing with female and coverage from male reads to isolate Y-contigs. By doing so, we were able to show that our method performs well across different sequencing platforms. (5/10)
@pastramimachine I just received my copy of the Guide today and saw in the preface the acknowledgment of an โAndy Kernโ. No relation, Iโm assuming :)
@SandeepEmbar @neuroimm @23andMe I'm glad you asked! Here's a link to a program we started last year giving out tests for free to underrepresented groups as you say. Note that the list has changed over time https://t.co/S2ryZqbsgu
@neuroimm @SandeepEmbar@23andMe A totally valid point of view - but as @SandeepEmbar suggested, our disease risk predictions for South Asians can only be improved if we get more data on South Asians so its kind of a chicken-and-egg problem.
@A_A_Zaidi @23andMeResearch@23andMe That's right - this beta test is only for those on the V5 chip (GSA array). The full update will be available to all, regardless of chip (date TBD).
Our 23andMe South Asian Ancestry Composition beta is here! If youโve got your test done in 2017 or later, please log in at https://t.co/dlZIqfcGf8โฆ and give us your feedback so we can improve ! Here are my results ๐ @23andMeResearch@23andMe
