🧬 The Cancer Biology Program’s Fall Retreat brought students and faculty together to discuss their science, challenge ideas, and celebrate the community behind the research.

Students shared their science through platform talks and poster presentations, sparking lively discussion and great questions from judges and peers. Shark Tank kept the questions coming before catching up with alumni at dinner.

Josh Lindenberger’s path took him from an early interest in medicine to infectious disease research and, unexpectedly, to the cancer research he fell in love with.

Now a Genetics and Epigenetics PhD student, Lindenberger trains in the lab of renowned cancer geneticist Guillermina Lozano, PhD, at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. He draws on the collaborations, expertise, and resources of both UT MD Anderson and UTHealth Houston while valuing the culture and connections within his program and beyond.

Congratulations to Yibo Dai, Sseu-Pei Hwang, Peyton High, PhD ’26, and Kris Wang, PhD ‘26, recipients of the 2026 Presidents’ Research Scholarship — the Graduate School’s most prestigious honor recognizing outstanding research accomplishments by senior students.

Dai, Hwang, High, and Wang presented their research during New Student Orientation, giving our incoming students an early look at the science being advanced by their fellow Graduate School student scholars.

We’re proud to celebrate these four researchers and the accomplishments that earned them this distinction.

Great science takes great teamwork. 🔬🤝

Leaders of the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences (CCTS) T32 program invited Gabriela Fernández Castillo, PhD, to join Graduate School trainees today for a session on the science behind effective research teams. Fernández Castillo is a leader of the Team Science Component at the UTHealth Houston Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences.

She shared evidence-based approaches to collaboration, communication, psychological safety, and coordination — skills that become increasingly important as biomedical research brings together people with different expertise to solve complex problems.

The session gave our trainees another set of tools for the interdisciplinary research teams they are part of today, and those they will help lead throughout their careers.

National recognition for a rising neuroscientist. 🧠🔬

Congratulations to Stephen Farmer, PhD ’26, who was recently selected as a 2026 recipient of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Outstanding Scholars in Neuroscience Award Program (OSNAP)!

Farmer recently completed his PhD in the Molecular and Translational Biology, and Neuroscience programs, conducting his doctoral research in the lab of Sheng Zhang, PhD, associate professor at The Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine at McGovern Medical School.

As an OSNAP awardee, he will present his research and connect with NIH scientists, program officers, and fellow neuroscience researchers at the award symposium in Maryland, in January.

Farmer will continue building on his work in neurological disease in September, when he joins the laboratory of Huda Zoghbi, MD, founding director of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute, and Professor of Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine.

The newest scholars selected for The Academy at GSBS took part in the program’s pre-matriculation bootcamp this week, with activities focused on preparing them to thrive in graduate school with high-level training and a strong peer network.

The experience is just the beginning. Through mentoring, workshops, professional development, and ongoing support provided by the office of student affairs, students in The Academy at GSBS are preparing for success throughout their biomedical science careers.
