United were awful against Burnley.

They were almost entirely reliant on winning duels and exploiting the opposition in transition to beat a team who are favourites for relegation. Admittedly, locking on man-to-man from the opposition goal kick gave them success as they consistently won duels and exploited the space in transition when Burnley kicked long, but come on, is that the standard at Manchester United nowadays? Dealing with direct play and having good individuals in attack to take advantage of open spaces?

Ultimately, Burnley lacked the quality in possession to get hold of the ball in open play for consistent periods, and that is where United are at their weakest. Fulham had less issues in this regard and killed United tactically. Because Burnley struggled to string some passes together which made for a transition-based game, United should have scored more as a consequence of having so many opportunities to transition forwards, but that doesn't mean the performance was good or bodes well for the future. It means that Burnley lacked the quality to exploit United and played into their hands.

Basically, against United, bypass their man-to-man press from the goal kicks and get possession higher up and they will consistently suffer because their open play press is so bad. We all know how Amorim's current and supposedly only tactical idea lacks pressure on the ball in this moment because of the unrealistic demands on the team to press in a 5-2-3.

In possession, Amorim's team were consistently forced long and disrupted in the build-up with De Ligt inverting into midfield. All that resulted in was the clogging of central lanes and the odd bounce pass out to one side before Yoro or Shaw were trapped and kicked long. As well as that, United punted their goal kicks out home to Burnley. I mean, really?

I go back to it - the only thing Amorim offered his team was man-to-man pressing from the goal kick which made Burnley bang it long onto the head of Yoro and De Ligt which saw Mbeumo and United's other top attackers get space to exploit in transition. That is hardly groundbreaking stuff. In fact, it's more individual quality than anything else.

No positives to take out of the game tactically. And we learnt nothing new about Mbeumo. We already know he's world class. Well, attentive viewers already knew that.

Ruben Amorim better use this international break wisely otherwise he won't see past Christmas.

Relying on individual quality in a basketball game against the favourites for relegation at Old Trafford is an unacceptable standard, even if Mbeumo made United excite at times.
