Today, Governor Moore and the state of MD affirmed their belief in redemption and second chances by signing HB 853. A life sentence should never be a death sentence. And while the work continues, today was a beautiful day for justice and hope. Organizing works! And we did that💚
The diligent organizing of the Maryland Second Look Coalition, in conjunction with supportive state officials, has successfully passed legislation that enables sentence review for incarcerated people who have served decades behind bars. TRNN in collaboration with the @mdsecondlook and @ACLU_MD has created infographics for family members and friends of incarcerated people to give a clear picture of the impact of the Maryland Second Look Act HB 853.
Since the Maryland Second Look Act's initial proposal, Host of Rattling the Bars and former political prisoner Mansa Musa has been speaking with loved ones and family members of incarcerated people, as well as returning citizens who have been the lead organizers of the bill. The following are several reports related to the long struggle to get HB 853 passed in the Maryland General Assembly.

HB 853 is on its way to Governor Moore’s desk for his signature. Thank you to our bill sponsors Delegate Pasteur & Senator Sydnor for championing this bill. Now we must urge Gov. Moore to sign the Second Look Act - a common sense, data-driven approach to decarceration - into law.

"If Maryland is to be a place where data and compassion drive policy, we cannot justify leaving these people behind. These reformed and deserving men and women serving sentences from decades ago need a second look. They need a second chance."

R’s are using fear mongering while we use data & proven measures - the Second Look Act does not guarantee release of any individual. It allows a person to request a review of their sentence by the courts AFTER 20 YEARS. These measures are the law in states like CA, OK, CO, NY.

We urge Chairman Clippinger to bring the Second Look Act up for a committee vote now and join his colleagues in supporting fairness & racial justice. The House Judiciary Committee shouldn’t be where justice dies. It’s time for MD lawmakers to prioritize the will of the people.
“The Second Look Act would offer a solution by ensuring that true rehabilitation – not politics or zip code – determines a person’s chances for release.” Read full blog here: https://t.co/lJgHaFV8i4
