He knew that stopping the Parandur airport project would give the opposition endless political ammunition. Yet he still had the courage to do it.

Now the Chief Minister has only one thing to prove: that the TVK government can build an equally ambitious, world-class airport at a better location.

The people most upset by this decision will probably be the politicians and bureaucrats who bought land there, hoping to profit from the project.

Senior aviation expert Captain Mohan Ranganathan warned that 60% of the Parandur airport site is water bodies and clayey soil, risking high costs and structural issues.

"Dumping 4,000 acres of concrete on water bodies would have devastating consequences for Chennai’s drainage system.

If Chennai saw destruction in 2015 due to floods, Parandur will make it worse. The floodwaters will have nowhere to go.

Chennai Airport can be developed like Gatwick Airport instead of investing billions in a Parandur Airport."

CM Vijay’s smart move against corruption - Pay them well, hold them accountable!

One of the reasons why corruption has crept into our society is the fact that politicians are not paid well compared with some other professionals.

By providing every MLA with a vehicle, ₹75,000 a month for maintenance and ₹25,000 for an assistant, CM Vijay is giving them a strong financial cushion, thereby reducing the incentive to seek extra income through corrupt means.

Instead, they can put their energy and focus into people’s welfare and public service. Also, if there are complaints of corruption, it will be easier and morally justified for him to take immediate action.

To put things in context, Singapore offers some of the highest remuneration for politicians.

An entry-level minister has a benchmark annual salary package of around S$1.1 million, while an elected Member of Parliament receives an annual allowance of around S$192,500.

Singapore also ranked 3rd globally in Transparency International’s 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index.

Singapore’s model is built partly on the philosophy that public officials should be adequately compensated while being held to extremely high standards of accountability, and Singapore consistently ranks among the world’s least corrupt countries.
