I concur! I think part of the backlash is driven by resentment politics rather than genuine indignation.
It’s intellectually lazy to reduce this to “he’s a racist” or “he shouldn’t be captain.” The issue is far more nuanced, especially among the “born free” generation. I think there’s a tendency to inherit the trauma and grievance of apartheid and then use that history as a source of moral authority in present day interactions, despite having never personally lived under apartheid.
Of course, im not saying it diminishes the reality of apartheid or its consequences. But as we’ve seen before, once inherited historical grievance is brought into every disagreement, it becomes almost impossible to have a genuinely nuanced conversation.
We haven’t adequately addressed many of the underlying issues of post 94 South Africa, and until we do, the “us vs them” dynamic will continue.
