Singapore will apparently stop covering the medical bills of unvaccinated COVID patients who refused to get vaccinated.

The worst punishment they could think of was the American healthcare system. Let that sink in.

Consults go into a big general pot and then are sent to next available surgeon. Added bonus we use some of the “slack” in the system. Better for pts too, seen more quickly, quicker to OR.

@drlesleybarron I think as a primary elective approach without a clear rationale for why, probably no. In emergency surgery, without a clear rationale for why, probably no. But it is a safe (more morbid) technique, sort of like laparoscopic vs. open colon resection and we still accept that.

Our 25 bed ICU has 25 unvaccinated Covid patients. It is expanded by taking resources to accommodate other emergencies.

If everyone was vaccinated, and the virus was still circulating at the same rate, we would have 2 or 3 intubated Covid patients. Easily absorbed.

@drcarl_vancouvr Interesting! Med student saw Gyne onc use it. Asked me if we used it - I said no. Wasn’t sure it would move the needle much clinically. How often would area of anast look good to naked eye but look bad enough on ICG to make you change your plan? What is NNT & cost to stop a leak?

Well it’sthat time of year – the time for new beginnings (for those of us in medicine). July is when medical students become residents, residents are promoted to the next year, or residents graduate + enter practice or fellowship. I’m happy to share a new beginning as well. 1/n

We’ll be back to visit, though please don’t judge us too harshly when we get soft because winter won’t really be a thing for us anymore and I’ll forget that -10 means it is a beautiful winter’s day.
