Remember all those Labour attacks on Conservative cronyism? Pots and kettles …
Revealed: The cabal of Labour families in Burnham’s nepo-government. This week’s column👇🏻 https://t.co/LzGXGmhF0D
Rob Sturdy signed a three-generation tenancy at Eden Farm, so that one of his children could take it on after him. Then the estate that owns the land agreed a deal to cover forty-two per cent of it in solar panels.
His grandfather Guy came to Eden Farm in 1954. His father John took over in 1971. Three generations at Old Malton, North Yorkshire, growing cereals and rearing dairy calves across 280 acres. A hundred and thirty of those acres are going under 90,000 panels and a battery storage system.
The Sturdys do not own an acre of it. They rent. The landlord signs the deal and collects the money. The tenant loses half the farm and gets nothing.
And it is worse than half. Take those fields away and what is left barely grows enough straw to bed and feed the cattle. You do not lose 42 per cent of a farm. You lose the farm, slowly, while it still looks like a farm from the road.
North Yorkshire Council refused the plan in October 2023. Five hundred people objected. It was the biggest fight over a planning application the area had ever seen. Then, just before the public inquiry opened, the government stepped in and took the final decision away from the inspector and handed it to a minister.
At that inquiry, the developer's barrister told the room the scheme would take just 0.16 hectares of the very best farmland.
Nought point one six. That is what a grading map can be made to say about a farm that feeds people.
The minister approved it in February 2025. His decision notice gave significant weight to the fact that the site sat next to a substation.
The family is finished because the cable was close.
They went to the High Court and spent heavily doing it. In September the judge found no arguable case. There is no compensation. Emma Sturdy has said they are not sure they can even stay in the house.
Rob Sturdy said one thing at the start that has stayed with me. He said he did not want this to become the last harvest.
He signed a contract for his children. A minister read a map.
NEW PM has done first interview with @bbclaurak … rules out “early GE” says will deliver 2024 manifesto…
Said on Monday this is one of the big first judgements we could make in the first few days… eg he hasn’t pushed or mentioned many of the things he has written down previously as his plan for Britain (ie in book co written with Steve Rotherham) on constitutional and economic reform which would have pointed to a run for a new mandate.
🚨NEW: Rachel Reeves reportedly "screamed" down the phone at Andy Burnham last September, demanding he rolled back comments where he called for Britain to stop being "in hock to the bond markets" - remarks that had sent borrowing costs soaring
She told him "my phone's not stopped ringing!", to which Burnham replied: "Rachel, I simply don't believe you."

🚨 Did Andy Burnham breach the Ministerial Code?
The timeline behind No 10 North raises serious questions.
Today I’ve written to Sir Laurie Magnus and Dame Antonia Romeo asking them to investigate.
As a member of the public I can’t force an investigation…
…so hopefully an MP picks this up and demands answers.
NEW: Andy Burnham declines twice to say he can trust Donald Trump
Asked by @BBCLauraK he says only that he’s had one “warm” phone call with him. Asked a second time he says “it’s a changing world”
It’s the first evidence of how Burnham will handle the US relationship. The diplomatic answer Keir Starmer used to give was that he did trust Trump
Burnham also declines to commit to spending 3% of GDP on defence despite John Healey saying failing to do so leaves the country unsafe. That position surely cannot hold if Healey is to remain in post
He says there won’t be an “early” election but doesn’t rule out calling one before 2029
Let me just reiterate what’s happening in Piddington.
They want to put 1250 illegal migrants next to a village of just 350 people. Outnumbered.
They are free to roam, come and go as they please.
They are also ALL men. No women or children.
No consultation. Disgrace.
Albanians are running drugs gangs from our prisons unimpeded.
I obtained official data showing Albanian prisoners made an incredible 157,962 from jail in just six months.
They should all be deported.
110 acres of prime agricultural land, 42% of the entire farm has been stripped away from a 2nd generation farm tenant with a 3 generation lease legally! … for a SOLAR factory!
Under the lease land could be reclaimed by the landlord if they could get non agricultural planning permission. The local council refused but Ange overruled the decision.
Leaving the farm unviable, with little compensation and losing food producing prime land forever.
All for the greater good.
For fourteen months Dave has checked the kitchen latch twice every morning, and on Thursday it did not matter, and the reason it did not matter is the most Keith thing that has ever happened.
The kitchen has always been the one boundary. The Crediton farmer warned Dave about it before Dave even bought him: Keith had got into the last farm's kitchen once, stood in the middle of it, ate nothing, and left, with the air of an animal confirming that the option existed.
Dave heard that story and bought Keith anyway, because the east ditch needed clearing and a man will talk himself into anything at an autumn sale. And then Dave spent fourteen months making sure the story did not repeat, checking the latch, checking it again, the one line he was determined to hold on a farm where every other line had long since fallen.
Keith opened every other gate. The record shows it. Forty-odd escapes, the churchyard, the barn roof, Steve's garden, the feed store, the lot. But not the kitchen. The kitchen latch was a proper one, high and awkward, and Dave checked it morning and evening, twice, and for fourteen months Keith looked at it and did nothing, which Dave took, wrongly, as a sign that this was the boundary Keith could not cross.
It was not that Keith could not cross it.
It was that Keith was waiting for the door to be open anyway.
Thursday morning, the first properly warm morning of the season, Dave propped the kitchen door wide with the old flat iron the way he does on warm mornings, to let the air through while he had his tea, the latch he had guarded for fourteen months now hanging off an open door and guarding nothing at all.
Keith walked in at 7:52am.
He did not force anything. He did not open anything. He simply arrived, the way weather arrives, through the gap that was already there, and stood in the middle of Dave's kitchen, exactly as the Crediton farmer had described, exactly as Keith had apparently been intending to do since the day he worked out that the whole elaborate defence rested on a door that would, one warm morning, be opened voluntarily from the inside.
He ate nothing. There was food within reach. He ignored it.
Dave came in from the yard and found his goat standing on the kitchen flags, looking at him, with an expression Dave has spent the days since trying and failing to describe as anything other than: finishing.
Then Keith turned and walked back out through the open door, unhurried, the assessment complete, the last boundary on the farm confirmed as available whenever he next decides the day calls for it.
Dave did not chase him. There was no point. The thing Dave had been preventing had not, in the end, been an escape or a theft or a break-in. It had been an inspection, fourteen months in the planning, and it had passed.
The farmer's wife logged it in the permanent record. The entry does not describe damage, because there was none.
It reads, in full: Kitchen. He came in. He looked. He left. We are not, I think, in charge here, and I am no longer certain we ever were.
Dave still checks the latch. Dave knows, now, that the latch was never the point.
Keith is on the barn roof, thinking about something else.

I don’t want “hope”. That is meaningless. I want a detailed plan so I’m not constantly paying more in taxes with nothing in return.
I want the small boats to stop. I want small businesses to thrive, growth and workers to be better off than scroungers.
You have no plan.
