The launch of the National Precious Metals Refinery at Bole Lemi Special Economic Zone marks a significant milestone in Ethiopiaโs industrial development ambitions.
Established through a partnership between Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH) and international investment by Sam Precious Metals, the refinery represents an important step toward strengthening the mining sector and advancing domestic value addition. Mining remains a priority productive sector for Ethiopiaโs economy, with gold delivering remarkable results. This initiative reflects the Medemer Governmentโs commitment to linking the countryโs productive resources with domestic processing, industrial capacity, and sustainable value creation.
With the capacity to process more than 600 tonnes of precious metals annually at full capacity, the refinery is designed to assay, refine, and cast gold into export-ready bullion, alongside producing cast and minted gold and silver bars in various purities.
The refinery also lays the foundation for positioning Ethiopia as a regional hub for precious-metals refining and manufacturing, enhancing transparency, quality assurance, and confidence in gold valuation. It also represents a strategic step toward transforming Ethiopiaโs natural resources into greater domestic value, stronger industrial capabilities, and expanded opportunities in regional and international markets.
The National Precious Metals Refinery embodies a clear ambition: to move beyond resource extraction toward processing, manufacturing, and creating greater value at home.
