People are unbelievably dense here. They point out Malaysia's larger Chinese minority as some counterpoint. The British were just better colonialists who had a less exploitative model.

The British built 3x the roads and railways in Malaysia that the Dutch did. They spent 2-3x the amount per capita more than the Dutch.

Educational enrollment was 2x higher in Malaysia and infant mortality was 2x lower.

Javanese villagers were supposed to set aside one-fifth of rice land for export crops or work one-fifth of the year in government fields. Nothing like this exists in any British colonial government. The mortality in these fields was extremely high. It was government enforced slavery.

There was also a system of transfers from the surplus profits on Java to the Netherlands govt. This was a direct extraction of wealth, again much more aggressive than anything the British would do.
