She was 18. 🫡🇺🇸❤️
Most people her age were worrying about college.
Monica Lin Brown was in Afghanistan.
On April 25, 2007, near Jani Khel, an IED hit her convoy. Mortars started falling. Soldiers were wounded.
Brown ran toward them.
Through enemy fire and explosions, she reached the wounded and began treating them. When mortars kept landing nearby, she did something unforgettable:
She used her own body as a shield.
At 18 years old.
For her actions, she received the Silver Star — the first woman to earn it for combat in Afghanistan, and only the second woman since World War II.
She wasn’t a general or a lifelong veteran.
She was an 18-year-old medic who ran toward the danger when it mattered most.
Story based on official U.S. Army records and her Silver Star citation. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Today, we remember the 13 American service members who lost their lives at Abbey Gate.

Born this day, August 25, 1937.
Then-2nd Lt. Capers led a 9-man Force Recon team deep into enemy territory near Phu Loc, Vietnam, March 31–April 3, 1967.
Multiple contacts. Outnumbered. On the final day, a claymore ambush and heavy fire tore through the team. Capers took multiple gunshot and shrapnel wounds and a broken leg.
He refused to quit.
Kept leading.
Directed supporting fire.
Got every one of his Marines on the bird before he would board.
Nearly 60 years later, on June 18, 2026, President Trump finally placed the Medal of Honor around his neck — the first Black Marine officer to receive it.
Semper Fi, Major.
Happy Birthday, and thank you for your service.
