I was painted in white.
Then, a stroke of yellow—
And the prying question: Why
do people die, Mother? Why?
Suddenly, I don’t know how,
grey swept over me—
thick, oppressive,
a million souls in a single square mile.
Like a sob cutting through,
came the ancient question: Why
do people live, Lord?
What are they living for?
But soon—I feel it, I know it—
I’ll grow into green.
Only so, just so,
