We love these Thai artists enough to learn their language, culture, customs and social context not because we have to, but because we genuinely want to understand and respect the people we support. That’s why it hurts when the same consideration isn’t extended to our culture.

Thai classical dance itself developed through centuries of local evolution while incorporating Indian influences transmitted through religion, literature, ritual, Khmer, Mon and Srivijaya networks, as well as possible direct Indian contact. Some Thai movement vocabulary also shares identifiable similarities with Indian classical traditions, including Odissi. Our cultures have a long history of cultural exchange. Its even more hurtful coming from Thai artists because Thai and Indian culture share a lot of cultural similarities.

Which is why seeing Indian classical dance reduced to a stereotypical “Bollywood” gesture for a joke is especially frustrating.

What Fourth is doing may have been completely unintentional, but these movements are not random hand gestures to us. Indian classical dance is an ancient, highly disciplined art form deeply intertwined with spirituality, devotion and storytelling. The hand and finger movements are codified and carry specific meanings. Years of training go into learning them properly. Through gestures, expressions, movement and music, entire stories including the Ramayana (which btw is also borrowed into the Thai culture) can be communicated without spoken lyrics.

So watching everyone laugh and treat these movements as a silly stereotype is genuinely hurtful. These are art forms through which people have worshipped and expressed devotion to their Gods and Goddesses for generations. There is beauty in them, but also history, discipline and sacred meaning. They are not random “Indian movie” movements.

It’s 2026, yet these caricatures of Indian culture are still casually reproduced. Intent matters, but it doesn’t erase impact. Something can be unintentional and still be ignorant, reductive and hurtful. These artists may not have understood what they were imitating and that is precisely why they need to learn.

I don’t expect everyone to know everything about Indian culture. But I do expect the same willingness to learn that we, as international fans, are constantly asked to show toward other cultures.

This isn’t hatred. It’s hurt, disappointment and exhaustion. We can love an artist and still call out cultural insensitivity. Respect should never be conditional on fandom, and appreciating another culture should never require us to overlook disrespect toward our own.
