Most people think vaccines just "prevent disease."
That's not wrong. But it's incomplete.
Here's what vaccines actually do inside your body — and why one fraudulent study still haunts public health today 🧵

Ebola has a running head start. By the time the outbreak in DRC was detected, there were already many suspected cases and deaths. We’ve seen that if you reach an Ebola outbreak in days, you can stop it in weeks. Months of delay? It will take much, much longer. That’s why countries need to surge support to affected communities now. https://t.co/jkMXQwZ55w

Absolutely. Risk Communication & Community Engagement isn’t a soft add-on to outbreak response. It’s a clinical intervention.
History shows: where RCCE is strong, outbreaks are shorter. Where it breaks down, transmission continues — regardless of how good the medical countermeasures are.
Communities as partners in educating other community members and being active participants to an effective response.

This is drug repurposing in real time.
Molnupiravir was designed for COVID-19. Now it’s being evaluated for Bundibugyo Ebola — a strain with no approved vaccine and no licensed treatment.
The reason it matters: it’s an oral pill. In remote, conflict-affected eastern DRC, that deployment advantage over injectable treatments is significant.
Animal studies show promise. Human trial data is still needed.

Zambia reaching children under 5 across six provinces this week.
Polio has no cure. Vaccination isn’t just personal protection — it protects every child who cannot be vaccinated.
That’s herd immunity. It only works when coverage is high enough.
UNICEF Zambia’s campaign this week is community protection in action.

This is a landmark moment for HIV prevention.
South Africa has the world’s largest HIV epidemic — 8 million people living with the virus.
Now, @PresidencyZA President Ramaphosa is rolling out a twice-yearly injection with 100% efficacy in young women (PURPOSE 1) and 96% efficacy across broader populations (PURPOSE 2).
For millions living with adherence barriers — this changes everything.

Four nurses. Survived Ebola. Discharged.
This is the part of outbreak response that rarely makes headlines — but it matters as much as any treatment advance.
Nurse survival means experienced responders stay in the system. DRC needs every one of them.

Three experimental vaccines. One Ebola strain. One clear lesson from history.
The rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine (Ervebo) went from trial to WHO approval in under 5 years — one of the fastest vaccine authorisations on record.
CEPI funding means speed. That matters when outbreaks don’t wait.

The study was funded by lawyers suing vaccine manufacturers.
The data had been manipulated.
In 2010, The Lancet fully retracted it. Andrew Wakefield lost his medical licence.
657,461 Danish children were later studied.
No link. Not one case.
The HPV vaccine is unlike any other.
It was designed not to prevent an infection — but to prevent cancer.
In Scotland, women vaccinated at ages 12–13 were tracked for 16 years.
ZERO cases of invasive cervical cancer. ZERO.
That is what prevention actually looks like.
Two nurses. Survived Ebola. Holding their recovery certificates outside a hospital in DRC.
This is what outbreak response looks like when it works — trained healthcare workers who contracted the virus, received care, and walked out.
DRC has managed more Ebola outbreaks than any country on earth. That experience is not a burden. It's hard-won expertise — and today it shows.
Recovery matters. So does the system that made it possible.
