🔥 Updated @Medscape@GinP_Medscape Primary Care #Hack "Interpreting hypercalcaemia & hypocalcaemia in primary care"!
🎯 Hypercalcaemia is common in primary care; primary hyperparathyroidism & malignancy account for 90% of all cases

Just because it’s called SMALL vessel disease doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a BIG impact!
Small vessel disease (SVD) is a BIG contributor to vascular dementia, along w/large vessel cortical infarcts
Do YOU know all the faces of small vessel disease?
Common imaging markers of SVD include:
--White matter hyperintensities (WMHs)
--Lacunes
--Enlarged perivascular spaces
--Microbleeds
--Small subcortical infarcts
--Brain atrophy
But what you see isn’t always what you get!
Even in patients w/similar degrees of SVD, clinical symptoms can be very variable.
Variability exists because of:
--Perilesional penumbra
--Remote effects from disruption of brain connectivity
--Differing brain reserve & compensatory mechanisms
So remember, imaging findings of SMALL vessel disease are just the tip of a very BIG iceberg

Beta blockers and potassium balance.
Beta blockers can affect potassium balance in a number of ways, including:
●Hyperkalemia
Beta blockers can cause hyperkalemia, or high blood potassium levels, through a few mechanisms:
TREMOR
▪️Involuntary, rhythmic, shaking movement of part of the body.
▪️Occur when muscles repeatedly contract and relax.
▪️Classification:
🔸Physiologic (Normal)
🔸Abnormal (Pathologic)
🔸Essential (Hereditary disorder)
🔸Cerebellar (Damage to cerebellum)
🔸Secondary (medication, or substance use)
🔸Psychogenic (Psychologic factors)
▪️Benign essential tremors
🔸Postural symmetric tremors often noted in the hands & wrists.
Positive family history is often present.
🔸Diagnosis can be made clinically based on B/L upper extremity tremor lasting at least 3 years without other neurological signs or symptoms.
▪️Resting tremors are present in Parkinson's disease
▪️Young people presently which should be evaluated for Wilson's disease, with Ceruloplasmin levels and urinary copper excretion testing.
▪️Intentional tremors, postural, typical of cerebellar tremors.
🔸Warrant MRI of the brain for further evaluation.
